The ARCHOS 28 internet tablet is the first WiFi connected Android device to offer a compact form factor with a 2.8 inch touch-screen, a wide range of features such as video, Internet browsing and tons of applications downloadable from AppsLib, as well as a music application every player of this size deserves.

A Connected Android Pocket Tablet
Connected AndroidAndroid is the application framework developed by Google for connected mobile devices, coming stock with a full pack of connected apps, such as a web browser and email application. The five home screens of the Android user interface allow for advanced personalization: icons can be placed, moved or erased with just a flick of a finger.

ARCHOS products also feature an accelerometer and a graphical accelerator (3D OpenGL ES 2.0) to exploit the Android 3D capabilities such as live wallpapers, transition effects and 3D games.

In addition, since the ARCHOS 28 is Wi-Fi enabled, it'll automatically download the latest firmware and OS updates.

Brilliant 2.8-Inch TouchscreenThe ARCHOS 28 boasts a 2.8-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution touch screen that makes navigation and application use a breeze.

Fantastic Multimedia PlayerARCHOS 28 features include a new music application, adding 3D cover animation support and the ability to add a mini music widget to the home screen (in order to control your music at any time). Also, because it is an ARCHOS music player, the ARCHOS 28 IT is able to play all the music formats you'll need to keep your digital music experience as large as it can be.

Who doesn't have a few minutes to watch a little video? The ARCHOS 28 IT answers this need with its video player application that supports all the popular video formats. Or, if you're more into personal photos, why not open the Gallery application and show your latest vacation to your friends or even share them via a wireless network.

Basically, you won't find too may media players with a list like this:

Video Support: MPEG-4, H.264, WMV/VC1, Motion JPEG, MPEG 2 codecs with AVI, MP4, MOV, 3GP, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, MKV, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, and WMV extensions

Tuff-Luv Premium leather case - Archos 5 (120GB / 160GB / 250GB) Review

Tuff-Luv Premium leather case - Archos 5 (120GB / 160GB / 250GB)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a case only, I'd give this a 5 - very nicely built, good leather feel and looks nice.
Two issues, however, caused me to downgrade the rating - 1 minor, 1 significant. The minor issue is the bulk the case seems to add to the player - its not a huge addition, but given the fairly hefty size of the Archos 5 to begin with, the case seems to possibly push the size of the 5 plus case to almost obese.
The major issue is that with the way they've designed the case, its impossible to place the 5 on to the battery dock without removing the case. The maddening thing is that if they had placed the front closure and its corresponding magnets a little different, it would have worked (I tested it by repositioning the 5 so that just the leather was between the 5 & the dock and it worked that way.) So the case has to be removed in order to use the battery dock - a big pain seeing that I wanted the 5 to be protected by the case at all times. [I don't have the DVR dock, but I assume the problem applies with it too.]
In the end, a 5 star case gets downgraded to a 3 star rating because faulty design causes incompatibility between the case and the battery dock.

Archos 5 32 GB Internet Tablet with Android Review

Archos 5 32 GB Internet Tablet with Android
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got my new Android 5 500GB direct from Archos yesterday and its quite a beauty. I'm upgrading from my old Archos 5 250GB, so that will be my primary point of comparison. I also have the following to compare to: iPod Touch 64GB, Archos 605, Walkman X, Samsung P2, and a host of other MP3 players large and small.
Given that my iPod Touch upgrade this year was less than astounding, I pretty much figured that this upgrade for Archos would be similarly understated. Mainly I just wanted the extra hard drive so I could backup all my laptops onto my music player. I was wrong! The new Android version seems to have a whole new feel both in form factor and the new software. I had heard that Archos was having problems with the software, but they seem to have ironed most of them out as of 1.1 firmware release. I did update my firmware immediately, and the process was quite smooth.
I'm going to rate this player on my absolute scale. I will also be making notes on the value of the upgrade from my old Archos 5. Note: I mostly use this as a media center to play music and video; secondarily as a backup drive.
Let's get to it then, these are the things I love about my new Android:
1) 500GB -- totally awesome amount of disk, I can now put just about every digital file I own on the Archos.
2) Android interface -- the overall feel of the software interface has definitively improved with the integration of Android. Effects are crisper, the esthetics are cleaner, things seem to happen faster. I especially like how easy it is to access the most recently played song or video from the main screen, pops up with a little thumbnail that you tap on and voila, resumes right where you left off!
3) Apps -- with Android we now have access to some serious app selection. Of course, nobody compares to the Apple App Store, but this comes the closest.
4) Weight -- this actually feels lighter to me than my 250GB.
5) Dock/DVR -- this popped right into my old 5 DVR and started playing right away. I still think this is the best DVR/Player combination available of all the MP3 players.
6) Video/Hi Def -- of the players I have owned, this has the best, biggest, and highest resolution screen.
7) Portrait/Landscape -- Archos has borrowed the iPhone trick of rotating the display according to orientation. I guess they have an accelerometer in there now, I dunno. Still, its fun to see this feature on an Archos. Its a lot easier to navigate playlists in portrait mode.
8) Easy and regular firmware updates -- with a WiFi connection, the firmware updates are easily performed on the unit itself. That's the easiest system I've seen of all my players. One thing I've learned about Archos over the years, they will put out a steady stream of firmware updates.
9) WMV/MTP mode-- very smooth interface to Windows for either Media Monkey or Windows Media Player.
10) Dedicated volume button -- power and volume buttons have been conveniently located onto the top edge. This is actually much easier to use when it is docked on the DVR (which is where mine spends most of its life!).
11) Sound quality is quite good, sounds great through my Klipsch speakers and seems to have more oomph than my other players.
12) WiFi/Browser -- has a good browser and WiFi connection has worked well for me. I think the keyboard is better than the Touch's, although Safari is probably the slightly superior browser. The bigger screen also helps for browsing. Overall I'm inclined to give the Archos the top ranking for browsers.
13) I just discovered Twidroid, one of many apps pre-loaded, allows me to check my Twitter in a really nice format -- love it!
14) Portability -- well there's only so much portability that can be expected with a screen and hard drive this large. This new design is smoother and rounder so its a little more comfortable in a pocket. It is very easy to carry around as a handheld device, fits nicely in my hand as I stroll about the house trying out all of the Android Apps! In any case, this is not as portable as a Touch but I think its pretty good for a small computer -- which is basically what this is.
15) No extra plug ins needed (so far!). Always in the past I've laid out another $40 for additional Archos plugins to play iPod format music and other video formats. So far I haven't had to do that -- thank you Archos :)
16) Archos will stand behind their product. I've had to send in a couple of Archos units over the years and they have always been happy to either repair or replace the unit without quibbling about it, as long as its under warranty. Note: it did take two weeks to get my unit back!
17) Multi threading: now I show my engineer/geek side. This baby can do a bunch of different stuff at the same time, unlike the iPhone/Touch which can really only do one thing at a time. The Android can be doing other stuff while you are listening music. I love the little bar on the top that you can pull down and switch to any other task that is running.
18) Built-in kickstand, very nice feature.
19) Stylus friendly touch screen -- sometimes you just get tired of trying to type a touchscreen keyboard with fat fingers! In general, this is one of my favorite touch screens. Most of the other touch screens, including iPod/iPhone, are capacitance which means stylus won't work
20) Micro USB cable plug-in: finally a standardized USB plug and you can have it resting on its kickstand while plugged in :)
Given that the Archos tops the class in several categories, and continues to be the best 500GB 5 inch screen player available I give it about a 4.7 stars out of 5 (round to 5). There are a few things I'm less than thrilled about:
1) Update: I believe you can now format your drive in a Windows friendly format on 1.7.96 version of firmware. External hard drive EXT3 -- as I understand it, Archos changed to the EXT3 hard drive format for reasons of speed and reliability. The result for me is that I can no longer simply select hard drive MSC mode, plug the Archos into a Windows machine and expect to access the drive. You have to install an Ext3 driver such as EXT2 IFS on your Windows PC. Once I did that I was able to access the hard drive and backup files to my hearts content.
2) The playlist interface didn't get much of an upgrade and its still kind of clunky. I want to simply tap my playlist and it starts playing. Often times I have to do a couple of extra taps to get the thing playing.
3) We lost the dedicated play button and removable battery a while back -- but I still miss them both! None of my favorite touch screen players has either of these features. I'm also missing the brown metallic color and the rubbery backside.
4) Finding a case for this baby is no easy trick. You're not going to find one at the local Best Buy I'm afraid. In the past I've resorted to ordering my Archos cases from European companies like I-nique and Noreve. This is generally true of any player that is not an iPod or a Zune.
5) As always with Archos, you must remember that you are dealing with a French based company. This means that they don't always provide the best support/service/upgrades to us Americans.
6) Lets face it, Archos is always playing catch up. Some of the new features aren't fully functional yet. I do have faith that Archos will fix all the little glitches with things like GPS over the course of the next 6 months. The Apps available are currently a bit limited. I expect this will improve over the coming months.
7) Keep in mind that this is not a unit for the faint of heart. This is more for the hobbyist who wants a cutting edge experience that may take some messing around to get it just the way you want it. If you want something easy that requires minimum effort then iPods are going to be more your cup of tea.
For me this is still the best player of its class -- that class being large hard drive, big screen PMP players with other fun features. Android makes for some fun possibilities, and overall I'm impressed with this as an upgrade. Once again, if you don't mind a smaller screen and you love apps I suggest you get an iPod Touch. If what you care about most is sound quality you may want to get a Walkman X. For me those are your top 3 touch screen players, it just depends on what you care about the most.
Note: 10-23-2009; I upgraded to firmware version 1.2.03 which fixes some App, Browser, and YouTube issues. Apps do seem happier now, upgrade process was very smooth. Still happily listening to tunes for about 8 hours a day with no problems :)
Update 11-7-2009: I've been running version 1.2.15 with a host of bug fixes and the unit does seem more stable in general now. Wifi is working better and USB connection seems more reliable.
Update 11-23-2009: Upgrade to firmware v 1.3.07 -- a long list of bug fixes including a few improvements that I had hoped for to control the scanning of multimedia files/ ArcLibrary. Got an AppsLib update which seems to work more reliably. There seem to be a lot more apps available now (300 ish) in AppsLib. Just keeps getting better and better! Still is playing music day in and day out with no problems and I'm backing up 2 laptops worth of files onto my 5 IT.
Update 12-18-2009: I've been on firmware 1.4.16 for over a week now. Lots of little fixes, seems even more stable now.
Update 2-11-2010: Firmware 1.7.33 (Android Donut) upgrade. The upgrade was a bit of work, I ended up reformatting the drive and starting anew. However, power saving seems to work a lot better and I haven't seen it reset itself for quite a while now. This seems to be the most solid release yet!
Update 4-8-2010: Firmware...Read more›

Archos 32 3.2-Inch Internet Tablet with Android Review

Archos 32 3.2-Inch Internet Tablet with Android
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's cut to the chase. For $150, you can't go wrong. This is basically an iPod Touch, but it runs Android, and is $70 cheaper. Oh, and the sixth generation iPod nano? Complete junk compared to this. Its junk compared to any comparable PMP devices, but if you're in the market for a PMP in this price range, you can't go wrong for the Archos 32.
First, the good. I'm no videophile, so the screen looks good enough to me for a $150 3.2 in device. If you're one of those people that hates resistive touch screens, this is VERY finger responsive. Yes, it is difficult to see the screen in bright sunlight; but once the brightness is turned all the way up, I could see it just as well as most of my devices. I'm no audiophile either, but the sound is good compared to my Zune. It supports many file types from MP4, to OGG. There are no internal speakers, however, it does have bluetooth, so I'm sure you could find some portable bluetooth speakers somewhere. The bundled earphones are, of course, a POS.
It has a camera, and it does it's job. Just don't expect it to replace your Flip HD. Is it pocketable? Yes it is. Pretty much the exact same size as the ZuneHD, I don't feel it at all when its in my pocket. It has a fast, and smooth webkit browser. You're gonna love browsing the web with this. Flash support coming in October of course. This thing acts like a usb thumb drive, so you can add and transfer files from any operating system like Windows, OSX, and Linux. No proprietary iTunes or Zune in the way.
There are some things that just hurt the Archos 32... but compared to the sixth gen iPod nano, or other comparable devices, you wouldn't care. First, no SD card slot. You're stuck with the 8 GB for apps, files, music, and video. If you like styluses, it doesn't come with one and thus, no way to store one on the device. Like I mentioned before, no internal speakers and the camera is nothing to write home about. There is also a very WEIRD design (flaw?)... on the front of the device there are a "+" and "-" sign to increase or lower the volume. There is ALSO a volume rocker. I don't plan on using this as a PMP because one of my criteria for a PMP is physical buttons to change volume AND song, which is why I can't part with my Zune 1st gen. So, there are two ways to change the volume... interesting?
Finally, the biggest flaw. No access to the official Android app store (without some hacking). Instead, you're given "AppLib", Archos's own App store for Archos Android Tablets. This isn't them trying to be greedy or anything. Google forbids non approved devices access to the app store. One of the criteria to be approved is to be a phone. This is not a phone. Thus, no app store. If you want to know what apps they have available (not much), feel free to browse here: [...]
Alternatively, there are third party app stores (like AppLib). Like "SlideMe" and "AndAppStore". Check those out.
So there you have it. The Archos 32 has features features that blow out any other $150 PMPs.
**Update**
Concerning Apps, if there is an app you want, and cannot find a place to get the .apk file /or purchase it, contact the developer and see if you could work something out.

Archos 7 8GB Home Tablet with Android (Black) Review

Archos 7 8GB Home Tablet with Android (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Edit 20110314: I no longer recommend this to anyone. This product is Version 1 running Android 1.5. The new 7HT is Version 2 running Android 2.1.
[...]
The 7HT is the fourth Archos product I've owned. Aside from the Gen 1 Jukebox, 5IMT amd 5IT, I purchased three 7HTs. Two as gifts for friends. Both my friends are technical types, not your average Home Owner to whom Archos markets the 7HT.
Personally, I am very pleased with the 7HT. It does everything I wanted it to do. However, I'm a retired techie and I found workarounds for flaws which would hamper the average Home Owner. I'm also a moderator on the ArchoFans Support Forum and focus on the 7HT forum.
Flaw 1:
As delivered the Archos 7HT cannot create new folders. This flaw prevents using the 7HT as a Digital Photo Frame with the supplied App - Photo Frame. Photo Frame treats folders as "albums" for displaying slideshows.
--Workaround: Install an App like ES File Explorer which can create new folders.
--Conclusion: Works fine for me now.
Flaw 2:
Archos provides the Aldiko eReader. I downloaded two books before I installed an 8G microSDHC card. After I installed the 8G card Aldiko "lost" the books I downloaded previously.
--Workaround: Don't use Aldiko before you install a microSDHC card.
--Conclusion: Works fine now and I have over 100 epub formatted eBooks in Aldiko now.
Flaw 3:
The Archos 7HT has an Unexpected Wake from Suspend every two hours. I had a drop from 81% battery charge to 18% after 4 hours and 36 minutes when I had the Screen Timeout set to Never.
--Workaround: Installed FastBright app to switch to a minimum 5% screen brightness and set the Screen Timeout to 1 minute. With these settings I've experienced only a 3% to 5% battery decrease.
--Conclusion: Works ok now. Only a firmware update will eliminate the Unexpected Wake from Suspend.
Iffy:
Out of the box Video playback did not work for all the videos I tried which did play on my PC under VLC and on my Archos 5IT. Some folks at the ArchoFans forum have no problems and others have plenty of video problems.
--Workaround: Convert videos via a PC program. I've found one group of settings which work and am still searching for more.
--Conclusion: Works ok for me since I'm more interested in eReading and less in video playback.
Note 1:
The 7HT does not support video out despite what you may read at Amazon or elsewhere.
Note 2:
A USB adapter, micro A male to A Female, is required to use the 7HT as a USB Host for thumb drives, USB keyboards, mice, and powered USB hubs. These adapters are difficult to find as not even Amazon has any. The USB receptacle on the 7HT is micro AB and the supplied USB cable is micro B for USB client mode.
Note 3:
Out of the box the 7HT has no support for WiFi file copies. An App like ES File Explorer provides this.
Note 4:
I doubt if Archos will provide additional firmware updates to correct the "flaws" I mentioned above. They outsourced the Android development and are working on the new Gen 8 software.
Note 5: (Update 20100923)
In mid-September Archos did update the firmware. While I've seen no corrections for the "flaws" AF forum members and I have found the touchscreen to be more responsive and satisfying.
Conclusion:
If you're an average Home Owner and want the 7HT to "work" out of the box, I'm afraid you will be disappointed. If you have a gadget or Android or techie background the 7HT should work for you and at $200 is a great value. I recommend you join a forum like ArchoFans to get the most from your 7HT. For example, recently one of our ArchosFans members got the Google Android Market working on the 7HT.

Archos 43 4.3-Inch 16 GB Internet Tablet with Android Review

Archos 43 4.3-Inch 16 GB Internet Tablet with Android
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a video demo and testing of the Archos 43 - 16 GB Internet Tablet. Overall, I am very happy with its improvements over the Archos 5 IT. I have also changed the rating to a 5 stars after updating the OS to Android 2.2 with the Adobe Flash 10 player installed. This gadget rocks !
12/21/10 update
- I have been using this gadget on a daily basis since my original post for checking emails and surfing the web for news in the morning while still lying lazy on my bed. So far so good and it has replaced my iPhone for such use as it is lighter and has a wider display for full web-site surfing. The only issue I have is the short battery life which I have to circumvent by disabling the Wifi when not in use.
Overall feel and handling
The unit is extremely light and fits easily in a shirt pocket. It is much more portable than the Archos 5 IT and even the i-Phone. The single-touch resistive screen works quite nice also. I also noticed that the camera has a small clear plaster cover on it which should be removed for better recording.
OS and applications
12/01/10 Update
- Updated OS to Android 2.2 ! This gadget is a lot more stable and works faster after the update. We would need to reinstall the latest Google Marketplace app from the Archos fans site as the previous version does not work with Android 2.2. The Adobe Flash 10 player would also needed to be installed (from the Google Market place) in order to view flash videos from the websites.
Archos 5 used to have an application called Thinkfree office installed which allowed us to view PDF, excel, and word document. I am not able to find this same application on the Archos 43. However, this application and the Adobe viewer could be downloaded from the Google Markletplace. Do some research on the Archosfans website and you would be able to get the instructions on installing the Marketplace app.
Video and display
The display is very nice and sharp. In the demo video, I also showed a side-by-side comparison between an i-Phone and the Archos 43. The display area for the Archos 43 is 32% larger than an iPhone. Whereas the Archos 5 IT has a 65% larger display area over the iPhone with its 4.8" screen. Even though the display area is not much larger than the iPhone, the viewing experience is notably different. The video camera recording is of average quality. It does OK in well lighted area but the video is pretty grainy under poor lighting conditions. I also found some issues with the Amazon's Kindle viewer. The right side text was chopped off by the menu bar.
Sound
The external speaker is much better than the Archos 5 IT and produced much more sound in comparison.
WiFi and internet connection
There are major improvements in the Wifi connection as I experienced no trouble connecting the WiFi to my home wireless network. This was the most annoying problem I had with the Archos 5 IT.
Batteries
Charge time is much better than the Archos 5 IT. Took about 2-3 hours for a full charge. It lasts for about 2-3 hours of constant uses. If we leave the Wifi on, it seems to drain the battery charge rather rapidly. I did another benchmark testing by playing only video with the external speaker at 50% volume. It ran for a good 6-7 hours on a full charge.
It uses a standard micro-USB cable for connection to the PC.
Overall, I am quite pleased with this gadget particularly its light weight and larger screen size than my iPhone.

Tuff-Luv Archos 5 Internet Tablet 120-160GB Guardian - Black Review

Tuff-Luv Archos 5 Internet Tablet 120-160GB Guardian - Black
Average Reviews:

I have an original Archos 5, not the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. This is made for the latter, but it wasn't clear about that in the description. It only said it was for the Archos 5 - nothing more. SO, it doesn't fit mine. Since it came from England and took forever to get here, I decided to keep it and insert a piece of foam behind it to take up the extra space.
NOTE: It does NOT have a belt clip and is too big to fit in your pocket, so you have to carry it in your hand when you're on the move.

Archos 501598 48 500 GB Internet Tablet Review

Archos 501598 48 500 GB Internet Tablet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got this device, used it for less than an hour, and it has already stopped working.
When I first tried to access the AppsLib, it crashed and wouldn't reopen. The Archos 48 came with firmware version 1.9.21 (Android 1.6) installed, and once I connected to my WIFI, it notified me that a version 2 firmware was available. I updated it from the device itself, but after it said that "Update OK. Device will now restart to finalize the update.", it restarted -- but it would NOT get pass the "Archos Entertainment your way" boot-up screen (I've waited a good 10 minutes).
I tried resetting the device (both holding the on/off button for 10 seconds and also the pinhole reset button), but still had the same problem of not getting past the boot screen.
I looked up on the internet about many other people having boot-up problems with previous models of Archos and how to troubleshoot; there was one last hope for me by entering "Recovery mode" by holding on the Vol - button the entire time upon turning on the unit (this information isn't even mentioned in the included guide!). It took me to a white screen displaying and giving me these options:
Archos A48 (465 GB) Recovery (code 101)
---------------------------------------
Would you like to recover your system ?
- No
- Update Firmware
- Repair Disk
- Format Disk
- Check Filesystem
- Force Touchscreen Calibration
I tried every single option, yet, in the end, none of them solved the problem. Every time I boot up now, it just takes me to the Recovery mode white screen. The white screen of death. Moreover, when I select any of those options, after it's done formatting or display that it's "setting up operating system..." it would just result in a blank screen.
It's very frustrating and unbelievable.
The full PDF manual isn't even available on Archo's website - you'll get a 404 error! Does Archos not even take care of their own website either?
I've owned the Archos 605 before this one, and I still have a bitter taste about this company; before, they charged extra just to have the browser (which wasn't really even worth it) and certain video support codecs. Charging through USB is still slow and Archos basically forces owners to purchase their charging docks separately for "faster charging". Too much Nickel and Diming by this company.
While I was able to test out the Archos 48 just for a few minutes, before it wouldn't boot up again, I have to say I wasn't impressed by the touch screen response. There's no comparison to Apple's iPod Touch. The web browsing experience is much nicer on Apple's, despite the smaller screen size, because it has multi-touch and being able to pinch and zoom in/out, glide, etc. The Archos just really falls short in comparison.
If you look at their past record, there seems to be a lot of quality control issues with their product. It seems they don't fully test their product and just rush them out, and once one of their certain model ends up with a bad reputation, they'll just release a new one, still being unreliable on the surface, yet throw in new gimmicks like a new body casing/bigger screen.
While the screen may be bigger and the storage capacity might lure you in, at this price, it really doesn't feel like you're getting a quality product, especially if you've tried Apple's iTouch and have been spoiled by its hardware (and greater App support). The Archos does feel outdated and unreliable.
Cons:
- Poor quality control
- Battery charging through USB is too slow. (Who wants to wait over 8+ hours?) Archos still basically forces you to buy their "fast-charging" dock adapters.
- Touch screen is no where near responsive and smooth to Apple's iTouch
- Bulky
- Hard drive noise
* 8/3/11 - I received RMA number without hassle from Archos customer service. Sent out the unit. Will update the turn around time and what goes from here on.

Archos HDMI Mini Dock for Archos 5 (Black) Review

Archos HDMI Mini Dock for Archos 5 (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've been quite happy with our Archos 5 Internet Tablet for playing videos that we have previously transcoded. We have the battery dock that allows us to hook up the device to a TV via composite or S-video connections. It's been great while traveling as we have been able to watch movies on various hotel TVs.
We have an HD TV at home, so we thought it would be nice to hook the Archos up to the TV via HDMI like many of our other components. We purchased this dock to compliment the battery dock that we already have, and to use for when we are at home. When we first hooked it up, the video quality via the HDMI cable was quite impressive. But, as soon as we went to play a video, the show-stopper sound quality really grabbed our attention. It was distorted and clipped. We tried all sorts of tricks like lowering the device volume levels in case it was simply over-clipping the inputs. We could not get acceptable sound via the HDMI connection no matter what we did. We know the TV and HDMI connections work as we have other devices hooked up that way. We also know that our Archos works as the videos we play via the battery dock sound great.
So sad. Such much potential. So much disappointment. :(

Archos 9 PC Windows 7 Starter Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 9 PC Windows 7 Starter Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What it is:
The Archos 9 is a highly portable Netbook, without a Keyboard making it smaller and lighter weight. It has the touch screen functions of a Tablet/Slate Computer. :)
What it isn't:
It isn't a Notebook or Desktop PC. (Though if all you use your Desktop for is to play Free Cell, surf the web and check your E-Mail, then this will do the job in place of a full computer, but it isn't one, nor is it designed to be one. It also isn't a phone with delusions of grandeur. (Android Tablets and iPads.)
The Good:
It is light weight, small and portable, what you would expect from a Netbook or a Slate computer.
More power than an iPad or Android tablet at a cheaper cost than the iPad.
1. It does run Windows 7, with all that implies, to include:
a. Multi-tasking,
b. Full web browser
c. Full Flash support
d. Quicktime/iTunes
e. Real Productivity software like Open Office or MS Office, so not only can you show your Powerpoint presentation but you can edit it if you need to.
2. It has a USB Port and can add a couple more.
a. This means you can run USB drives, USB DVD drives, keyboards and mice as well as other USB uses.
3. It has a 60GB Harddrive, which is large for this class of product.
4. It uses an Atom 1.2 ghz (Multi-threaded) processor, which is typical for Netbooks of its age. Windows Experience Index is 1.7 when running Windows 7 Home Premium which is on par with other Netbooks.
5. It is available now at a great price.
a. Unlike other Windows Slate computers, which aren't available and keep getting pushed back and Android Tablets, which the OS isn't quite up to running a computer, yet, you can have this now.
b. It is significantly cheaper than the iPad, which isn't even in this class.
c. The only tablet in this class and price range that is currently available are the ASUS and Lenovo touch screen Netbooks and they are a bit larger with similar performance. (We also have a 9" ASUS.)
6. The Trackpad/Mouse buttons. While these strictly aren't needed, I find them very useful to have available. One thing I don't like about the ASUS is the need to open it to get to the touchpad/mouse buttons.
7. Built in camera for VOIP video chat.
8. A touch Screen that accepts stylus entry, and, with Windows 7 Home Premium+, very nice hand writing recognition software.
9. The Beta version of the Touch Screen tools at Archos: The calibration tools are really well done. Significantly better than those that came with the ASUS.
The Bad:
1. No SD Card slot. One would think having one of these would be a no brainer. (Oops.)
2. When they upgraded the processor they didn't upgrade the cooling. It gets a little warm on the left side which could have been avoided by simply venting the case.
3. It doesn't appear to accept Multi-touch even with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. This seems to be a lack of forethought on the part of Archos since Windows 7 handles Multi-touch very nicely.
4. The built in on screen keyboard. I hate it, YMMV but the Windows 7 Home Premium pop-up keyboard is smaller and on a 9" screen that is important.
5. No button to easily rotate the screen. With the buttons attached, one would think that would be one of them. they include a button for their keyboard and one for turning off the Wifi/bluetooth, at least they could have included one for rotating the screen, or allowed those buttons to be programmed to do it.
6. Windows Starter: While that is considered to be the standard OS for a Netbook, at least to get you started and to lower the cost, Windows 7 Home Premium is the cheapest version where the Touch Screen goodness is included. (Factor that upgrade into your cost.)
The Ugly:
Archos Customer Support pushed me off onto Microsoft when my Windows 7 Anytime upgrade wouldn't run. ("We don't support that upgrade.") Microsoft pushed it back on Archos. If either had read their own forums the answers are there. (Found them afterwards.)
So you don't run into the same issue here are the steps.
1. Plug your Archos in, it will take longer than the battery will last.
2. Adjust your power settings to not go to sleep, and not shut down.
3. Uninstall your virus checking software. (Simply turning it off may not do the job.)
4. Install the Drivers and Bios Updates from Archos' site.
5. Install all of the Windows updates for Windows 7 Starter.
6. Run Windows Anytime upgrade.
6a. Let it sit. Don't believe it has hung up just because it seems to be hanging. (Look at the HD light.)
6b. Don't try to do anything else while it is running.
7. Once you are rebooted into Windows 7 Home Premium reinstall your Virus Checker software.
8. Back up your hard drive. (Use that USB port and back it up to an external drive, in fact I recommend that anyway because 60GB is too small for what you may want to carry with you, and your most likely cause of needing a backup is because you dropped it and damaged the HD. :))
9. Ditch the software you don't need, empty the trash and defrag.
10. Calibrate your screen.
Additional recommendations:
1. Add: Open Office: Free, runs well and reads/writes most MS Office files.
2. Use Google Chrome for your browser. At this time less bloat than Explorer and Firefox which means it runs faster and cleaner on here. (No issues streaming Hulu or Netflix here.)
3. Get an External USB HD and either the port expander or a good USB2 hub.
4. Get an inexpensive keyboard or one of the roll up ones, if you want to take it with you, if you plan on doing a bit of typing.
5. Don't set your Power Plan to higher than you need it. (SO your batteries last longer between charges. (I do get between 4 and 5 hours out of these batteries.)
6. For long trips, or other periods of extended Battery use get an additional battery. (One of the only Netbooks or slates with the option of replacing the Battery.)

And you can set up video conferences (using the 1.3-megapixel webcam), chat with friends and surf the web on the go via the integrated 54g Wi-Fi networking (or tether to a compatible mobile phone via Bluetooth and surf via cellular connectivity; additional charges applicable). Other features include a 60 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM, built-in speakers, and up to 5 hours of battery life.

Smart Features for Intuitive Use The ARCHOS 9's controls are ergonomically placed for comfortable and natural use.
On the right, an optical trackpoint for finger navigation replaces the big touchpad of a laptop to ensure you can precisely point to any position on your screen.
On the left, screen brightness, Wi-Fi control, and left/right mouse buttons complement the virtual keyboard, so that your regular mouse controls aren't left aside.
When you want smart info that pops-up under web links or need to right click on something, it's just as easy as on a PC. That's just one of the many differences from earlier tablet computers.
Designed for Portability The Archos 9's form and design breaks the rules of the conventional laptop design. Its edges fan out from an already thin structure (0.67 inches or 17 mm at its thickest). And since it weighs less than 29 ounces, you can easily carry it with you in your handbag or backpack and use it any time. It also features a two-position leg-stand that best positions the device depending on how you are using it:
The upper position is best for viewing videos on the go, surfing the web, or reading
The lower position is ideal when you need to type memos or web addresses, send an email, or chat with your friends.

Windows 7 Starter Edition With Windows 7 on Archos 9 PC Tablet, accessing files regardless of where you are in the interface is easier than ever. Windows Search will transform the way you search and find your documents. It's simpler and much quicker than previous versions of Windows. Handy widgets can now be placed anywhere on the desktop. Whether you are looking for the weather forecast in your hometown, or a stock value in your financial portfolio, or the latest movie theater program, it's right at your fingertips.
The included Internet Explorer 8 will enhance your web experience. It is the fastest, easiest, and safest browser ever released by Microsoft. Discover the hot new features of the world's number one web browser with the Windows 7 dedicated pages. For example, with Web Slices, you can follow your bid on auction sites or view live sports scores directly in the toolbar of the new Internet Explorer 8.

Archos 5 160 GB Internet Tablet with Android Review

Archos 5 160 GB Internet Tablet with Android

Archos 70 - 250 GB Internet Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 70 - 250 GB Internet Tablet (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this device for 6 days and I've been very pleased with all aspects of it. I did a lot of research before buying and it has met all of my expectations. Best for those who already have some experience with the Android operating system.
Here is what I like:
It makes an excellent e-reader. I can use books from Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon, Google and my local library. It is a great PDF document reader and works great for comics as well.
It is very good internet browser. Flash capability isn't perfect yet, but having it in even a limited capacity opens up a lot more of the internet. I've been an iPod Touch/iPhone user for several years and I really like this device. The internet experience is superior.
Google integration. If you use Gmail and google apps, Android offers better capabilities than iOS devices. (Note, this does require a hack, but it is very easy to do).
Expandability. MicroSD, HDMI, USB. Archos doesn't control what I can and cannot do with this device.
Video playback. Excellent playback of local, network and internet video.
Form factor. I've played with an iPad and it's a fun device, but I like the size/weight of this device a lot better. It is more practical and easy to take with me. Much easier to hold for long periods of time when reading.
Battery life. Not iPad levels, but still very good.
What I don't like:
Future ability to upgrade. By only putting in 256MB of RAM, they have limited the ability of this device to Android 2.2, which means I will probably want the 2011 version, instead of upgrading this one. (I think they planned this)
Hacking is necessary. Because of limitations that Google puts on Android currently, it is necessary to hack the device to access it's full potential. This will ultimately damage the ability of new/inexperienced users to enjoy their Archos tablets.
Overall, I love this device and if you have used Android or if you are willing to do some research on websites like archosfans.com, you will love it as well!
