Installation took about an hour, direct replacement of the factory HU. Pretty basic once you get the original HU out.
I've had my P7200HD for about a month now.
The HD sig reception is great and I've had no probs breaking/losing signal. Having the 3 row display is nice for song info, etc.
ipod {I'm using USB2.0 cable} controls are great and ipod can be controlled from HU or ipod, which is nice for passengers.
Audio control gives many options for tailoring personal tastes. I've been able to fine tune to where my factory speakers sound pretty darn good. {Still going to upgrade them though.}
I haven't tested the CD/XM/bluetooth capabilities yet, but I'm confident that they will perform as well as the rest of the system.
On a scale of 1-10 I give the P7200HD a 9.5.
The only improvement that I would have would be a dedicated ipod connection from the rear of the unit.
Would I recommend the P7200HD?

Pioneer DEH-P5200HD CD Receiver with HD Radio and iPod Direct Control Review

(More customer reviews)For the past 4 years I've been using a Pioneer DEH-P6700MP car stereo which is almost identical to the Pioneer DEH-P670MP. I really liked the Pioneer as it seemed to really be able to liven up my 1998 Toyota Corolla factory speakers and had several features I regularly used and loved. I decided it was time to upgrade recently as my old Pioneer was having difficulty playing CDs while the AC was on, and it was making ticking sounds with many of my CDs. I decided right off the bat I was going to stick with Pioneer.
I spent a few days researching units and the main thing I kept noticing with many of the new 2010 Pioneer CD Players was the choice of going with one that had HD Radio or going with one that had Bluetooth functionality. It doesn't appear you can get a Pioneer with both. I decided to go with the HD Radio functionality due in part to the talk about how FM broadcast quality was greatly improved. (I'll post a small rant on this at the end of my review.)
It seems like all Pioneers have the ability to read MP3 CDs still which is great, but one of the nicer additions is the USB port on the front. You can plug in your iPod, Zune, or USB thumb drive and play music off it instead of burning a CD or MP3 CD. It also works for charging USB devices. I tried plugging my Black Berry 8350i into the USB slot, but it would not recognize it as media and would only charge the phone. Another input on this Pioneer head unit is the aux audio input jack on the front of the face that you can plug into with a male to male stereo audio cable. An unannounced features this unit has that will be useful for many is RDS support. The unit will display the song/artist when listening to radio stations that broadcast this information.
Installation: I thought going from one Pioneer to another would be a breeze and that the stereo wire harness would be the same as my old Pioneer. Just to be sure I contacted Crutchfield whom said many stereo manufacturers use the same harness for several years. Unfortunately I want to confirm in my review that the one from my DEH-P6700MP and the one in this new DEH-P5200HD are not the same. They look similar, but they are wired like a mirror image of each other and will not fit each other. *A note to the beginners, if you've still got a factory stereo in your vehicle, do yourself a favor and buy a harness adapter so you do not have to cut the factory wiring in the dash. That way if you ever go to sell your vehicle or you decide you do not like the stereo, you can just disconnect the harness and put the factory stereo back in.
I've been using the Pioneer DEH-P5200HD for a few weeks now and I like the unit a lot. Many of the various equalizer settings are the same as what was available on my old unit, and MP3 CD playback is about the same as well. Having the USB slot on the front is extremely convenient and I use it frequently to plug in a 8gb USB thumb drive full of songs. When you pull out the drive and plug it back in, the unit remembers where you were at in the last song and picks right back up. One major thing that takes some getting used to is the control knob on the radio. It seems to control everything in that one knob and it takes time to get used to. The remote control will help ease you into things as all the buttons are easily spelled out on it. It's also worth noting the remote is identical to my previous Pioneer remote and both were even cross-compatible.
Pros:
-Same fantastic EQ options Pioneer is known for. Includes bass frequency filtering options.
-USB & Aux input on the face
-USB input plays immediately when you plug in a USB drive, it also remembers what file and where it was at when the device was last plugged into it.
-iPod control from the face or remote
-RDS support for showing titles of songs from broadcast radio
-No lights and animated character distractions flashing all over the display.
Cons:
-Face detaches to the left side instead of flipping down which may be harder to remove depending on your dash
-HD Radio is not much of an improvement in quality of FM radio.
-USB input when reading from a USB thumb drive appears to read the folder order from last to first. (Song order is also affected if you add more songs to a folder later.)
-Control knob is an awkward all in one with a bit of a learning curve.
Do you remember upgrading from a tube TV to a flat screen? Do you remember the difference in picture quality? HD Radio is NOT that same upgrade. The HD FM radio broadcast quality is almost the same as what you've heard for years except now you don't get static, instead you get cutting in and out for seconds at a time when the signal starts getting weaker. Sometimes you hear the radio DJs talking about how much better their station sounds in HD, but the truth is there isn't much of a difference. I've read AM broadcast is hugely improved, but I have no interest in most talk radio programming so I have not tuned into any of it.
I'll try to come back and update this review once I've had some more hands on time.
*UPDATE 5/21/2010*
HD FM Radio: I've had this unit installed for a month now and have spent more time with the HD FM Radio functionality. I have turned off the blending mode that combines the HD and regular FM signals and find HD reception to be bad. I live minutes outside Houston and the reception on most the FM HD stations is extremely poor. For HD when the signal gets weak, the broadcast just cuts out all together. When I go downtown the signal is usually exceptional, but at 20 miles away from one of my frequent stations, quality becomes more miss than hit. When I drive to the southeast side of town, most the HD stations are unavailable at all. If you live inside a large city and are close to the radio stations you might enjoy HD radio, but for those of you who live in suburbs or you are far from the radio stations FM HD Radio is probably not for you.
Sound quality: I have finally decided this unit out performs my old Pioneer in sound quality. One of the custom features you can set and adjust that makes this possible is the ability to filter low bass frequencies from your 4 regular speakers. For those that like to turn up their music really loud sometimes, this can help you from blowing a speaker and also get rid of some of that extra distortion you can get from turning up the volume too much. That's not to say you can't still blow a speaker, but it should help.
Other than the HD Radio and the occasional issue with the all in one control knob accidentally getting pressed in when changing the volume, this Pioneer is a great unit. I'd definitely buy another Pioneer car stereo, they have not let me down yet. I'll update this review again if I come across anything new or something worth updating.
*UPDATE 6/22/2010*
USB Input Reading: I have finally found out what the order folders are read from USB flash drives. Apparently all folders and subfolders are read from the flash drive based on the order in which they are copied to the drive. While you would think this wouldn't be an issue, it can be an annoyance for those with multiple folders. If you select and copy multiple folders at a time to a flash drive, Windows seems to want to copy the folders from last to first. It does the same thing if you copy a folder with subfolders in it. Also if you go back and add more folders later, those will play after all the other previously copied folders.
Song playback order is also affected by the order in which they are copied. If you go back later and add songs, they will play after the previously copied songs in that folder. If you are like me and have purchased multiple albums from an artist and want to play them from oldest to newest, you'll have to copy the folders to the drive in the order you want them to play. If all this file order talk sounds like too much, the good news is that you can burn a MP3 CD with folders and they will be played in alphanumeric order without any special copying order or anything. For those of you with iPod, none of this order playback should be an issue since the iPod is actually playing the songs and sending the music to the receiver.

Clarion Mobile Electronics FZ501 - Bluetooth USB Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned the FZ501 for a few weeks now, and overall I'm pretty happy with the purchase. For the $130 I paid, it's a crazy good value. You just don't find good receivers at this price that include iPod and Bluetooth capability. I'm surprised so many receivers still include CD players. Who still uses those?? :) Just keep in mind there are some compromises that go along with the low price.
Pros:
-If you like simple, minimal design (and I very much do), this is a great looking unit. The single silver nob with a light blue glow behind it should blend nicely into most cars. Blue is all you get, however. You can't change colors. That minimalist approach also means you have to spend some time learning all the ways to push (up, down, left, right), twist, and click that big button to get things done. Once you get your head around it, it's fine. But if you want separate buttons and nobs for features, this isn't the amp for you. It's a bit like learning the iPod for the first time. You do a lot with a small number of controls.
-Solid, low noise amp. I drive a semi-noisy sports car with a big engine. This puts out plenty of power to the 6 stock speakers. The sound that comes out is clean and clear, with no distortion that I noticed.
-Digital radio tuner pulls in stations well and puts out good sound
-Front facing USB/iPod connection and Aux jack are very handy and easy to use. I like the way a small plastic door slides to hide/reveal them, keeping the design clean.
-It works with the newer iDevices, including the iPhone 4. If you want iPod/iPhone compatibility, be sure to do your research before buying. Just because it says it supports iPods doesn't necessarily mean it will support your device - always check.
-Overall, the Bluetooth features work well. It pulls in your phone directory and displays the name of the caller when you get an incoming call. It will connect automatically to your device, so you don't even need to think about it. And it lets you play music if your phone/device supports A2DP. One issue tho: you can't just tell it to support audio only(for example, if you prefer using your bluetooth headset for calls). That was an issue for me when I'd get a call on my iPhone; it would default to using the speakerphone built in to the receiver when I wanted it to go to my headset. You can pretty easily push a button on screen to change you 'source' to the headset, but that's a hassle when you're driving. On the audio side, it's amazing how you can just turn on your car, it links to your player, and you can just start playing music without fiddling with settings. Keep in mind tho: no matter what Bluetooth stereo or device you use, the sound will not be as good as a wired USB or Aux connection. Even if you're not an audiophile, if you crank up the volume very much, you'll notice the difference in quality. It's not _bad_, it's just not as good as a wired connect.
-If you have steering wheel controls, the optional interface adapter works very nicely. Being able to change volume / mute / go to the next track on my iPod was nice. However, when using the radio, the track skip buttons just changes the frequency up/down, not the presets. What brilliant person thought to set it up that way??
Cons:
-You have to use a button on the remote to change the display from the radio station or track playing to see the clock. Seriously. If you just want to look down and glance at the time, keep that remote handy. It boggles my mind why they made that choice.
-The display itself is somewhat minimal. It has to scroll a bit to give you full song titles / album names / etc. It would have been nice for them to incorporate a bigger display that shows more at once. (Like the clock!)
-It only supports Sirius, not XM Satellite tuners
-No rear USB/iPod connection for folks that want to keep cables discretely hidden.
-No removable face plate to discourage theft.
-The inability to separate headset and music functions on Bluetooth mentioned above.
-I had some occasional Bluetooth drops or the connection didn't happen automatically without turning the unit on and off. The fault could be with the stereo or my iPod. Overall, this has been a pretty rare problem.
-The steering wheel control limitations mentioned above (thought that might be partly the fault of the 3rd party that makes the steering wheel interface cable).
Bottom line, I definitely recommend the FZ501 for the price.

Pioneer AVIC-Z120BT 7" In-Dash Double-Din Navigation CD/DVD/MP3 with Pandora iPhone streaming Review

(More customer reviews)[*** UPDATE 9/9/2010 - It turns out that firmware version 2.003, which I just installed tonight, fixes the bug where you have to press OK before your phone connects to the AVIC-Z120BT. I tested this out and it works as expected now. ***]
I got this AVIC-Z120BT unit a few days ago and installed it in my 2009 Nissan Frontier. The install did take a while; but, I had several quotes by some car audio installation places and I decided I'd be better off doing it myself and saving the money. So far, I am absolutely loving having this system in my truck!
In the attached video, I tried to go over some of the main features of this unit. I'll also try to cover most of the same material here for people that don't want to spend the time to watch the video.Here are the things I'm loving about this Pioneer navigation system:
1) The sound quality is very good. The radio reception is also exceptional for both AM and FM.
2) The media source selection is great! This unit supports playing from CDs & DVDs (including MP3s from either), SD cards with either video or music, iPods (using an additional interface cable), USB keys, or the internal AM/FM tuner. You can also add an HD radio tuner, although I didn't add that feature. Personally, I love that I can stick an SD card with all my music in this unit and it is always available to me without having to mess with an FM transmitter or hook up my phone to the receiver.
3) The navigation system itself is very good. The maps are up to date in my area, and it looks like new maps can be downloaded from Pioneer when they are available. It has all the standard nav features, like being able to adjust the scale or change the top of the map to be either North or to be inline with your current heading. It also offers turn-by-turn guidance, waypoints, and can be controled using voice commands - although I haven't played with this much.
4) The Bluetooth interface on the receiver is amazing! It automatically downloads the contacts from my phone whenever it turns on and then I have access to all of my contacts through the nav system. Even though my Android phone does NOT support voice dialing over Bluetooth, I can now use the voice dialing feature of this receiver and it automatically dials my phone.
5) The voice interface in general is very good. It handles everything from voice dialing to switching inputs - even when I'm driving down the highway. The included mic works fine for phone calls in the truck, although it does sound like I'm talking on a speaker phone (which I basically am when using this system).
6) Incoming calls on this system work very well. A small overlay pops up on the screen that lets you answer incoming calls, hang up, etc... It also mutes (or turns down) the currently playing audio during the phone call.
7) The backup camera is a great addition. It switches on automatically when the truck is in reverse, and it can also be used in conjunction with the map view - which will be great for towing.
8) The system boots fairly quickly. The backup camera and previously selected music source are available almost instantly, where the navigation system and other controls are available after about 15 seconds. My Android phone typically takes about 45 seconds to connect from the time the system first starts up.
9) I should have shown this in the video, but the screen tilt can be adjusted if you need it to angle up a bit. In my truck, I don't need it to tilt at all; so I tend to forget about that.
10) The interface looks great and is very easy to use! The system also looks great in my truck.
11) You can set an anti-theft password through a 'secret' interface, and the system will prompt for the password if the backup power is ever cut. I think this is a dubious 'anti-theft' feature since the system could easily be stolen and the thieves wouldn't find out about the password until they were back at the secret lair :). I guess I would have the satisfaction of knowing they probably couldn't use it...Although I absolutely love this Pioneer nav system, there are some quirks in the firmware that I hope will be addressed by future releases:
1) [*** UPDATE - This is fixed in firmware version 2.003. ***] When booting the system, you need to press OK on the warning screen BEFORE the system connects to your phone. Otherwise, you won't be able to voice dial until the car is turned off and back on again. If the system boots up into the map screen, this is pretty easy since the prompt will show before the map is displayed. If, on the other hand, the system boots into the media mode, the prompt won't even display until you manually switch to either the home screen or the navigation system - and it can be easy to forget until you need to make a call...
2) The AM and FM presets are named based on the text being broadcast by the station. That makes no sense in my case, so I end up with presets with names like "ive,". I wish that could just be turned off and I could just have the frequencies displayed - or it would also be great if I could name the presets myself. Normally, I don't mind remembering the preset numbers - but this interface doesn't really lend itself to that. Hopefully this will be fixed/changed soon!
3) I wish this system would show album art for songs that are on the SD card. I called Pioneer and verified that isn't supported in the current firmware.
4) On bright days, the display tends to be a bit washed out - even on the brightest setting. It's still visible, but just barely. I may end up getting my front windows tinted to help out with this.Overall, I really love this system and would highly recommend it if you want an integrated nav/bluetooth/multimedia system in your vehicle. The combined feature-set that this added to my truck wouldn't have even been possible a few years ago; and, the Pioneer pulls it all off with a very nicely integrated user interface. There are some quirks in the firmware, but I think they should all be easily addressed by future firmware updates - I just hope Pioneer does us all the favor of actually updating the firmware!
I will update this review to reflect any changes in my opinions, or if new firmware versions are released.

(More customer reviews)Without writing too many words i'd have to say i love this unit in my car, I drive a Pontiac G6, 2006 and the manufacture radio stopped playing and i had to replace it for about the same price for a new one of these, and i believe i made the excellent choice of buying this one. So far everything about it is great, does all it says and installation was 30mins tops. improved sound system for real and love playing movies while driving. the only thing is that i can't watch the videos in my iPod when i connect it to this unit. you'll need an extra cable from what i understand, for that to work. and yes my iPod is compact-able with the unit and i have my iPod set to allow an external video output. All-in-all i love this unit and u sure will. Need pics? write me and I'll post them.

(More customer reviews)First of all, the reason why I had purchased this item was because it had bluetooth and it was navigation ready on sale for only ($359). If the price is listed higher then $359 don't get it. Just wait for the price to go down. The higher end models that are twice as expensive and do not even include bluetooth or navigation ready. As soon as I had this item installed,
I was very impressed by the sound quality (you can custom tune the EQ), and I love how it's very simple to use. And it just came out as well.
It comes with a microphone where you can set it anywhere you want in the front of the car to talk into and it has the iphone function where you can dial numbers and view your phonebook through the screen. The touchscreen sensitivity is pretty good, not the best, but pretty good. I would rate the touch sensitivity 3.8 of 5 stars because its the push technology. I'd give the iphone's touch sensitivity 5 of 5 stars.
This system has a new feature called APP MODE which is awesome because you can view and control any of your applications from your iphone 4 or itouch through your head unit screen. The only downside to the APP MODE is Pioneer makes customers buy a specific cable for that feature to work. You need the Pioneer CD-IU51V which costs like $50.00 bucks. Not the Pioneer CD-IU50V. Total Rip-Off but its cool to own.
This unit comes with a remote control but it's really uncomfortable to use because it's so tiny and its hard to get a grip while driving. I would recommend you go on Pioneer's website and purchase a remote control separately (it's around $19-$29).
What's cool is that it can read SD cards. You can put pictures, movies, music, and etc. I prefer using an SD card over an ipod because ipod's require a long cable. Its just a pain to pull out the cable and then hide it every time you step out of your vehicle so that nobody see's it and tries to rob you.
Also, make sure you let the installer know that you want this head unit bypassed so you are able to watch movies as you drive. (Not that I recommend anyone doing that, but maybe for the passenger to watch and get comfortable with). If you don't get the head unit bypassed, videos will not play unless you are parked. I did the bypass myself and it doesn't take more than 5-10 minutes if you know what you're doing. In order to bypass it, you are going to need a Standard Bosch Relay (can be purchased at any electronic store for a few bucks or less). You do not want to get it bypassed by using a switch (let the installer know you don't want it done this way) because then you are going to have to turn the switch on and off every time you get in the car.
What I also like about this unit is that it will read almost any type of dvd video format. Also, you can go on itunes and burn 600 songs onto a dvd disc (format it as data disc), and it will play beautifully, all 500-600 songs. I recommend again, if you want to watch movies on screen from your itouch or iphone 4, you need to purchase the USB cable that pioneer has to offer (Pioneer CD-IU51V). NOT THE Pioneer CD-IU50V. You need the Pioneer CD-IU51V.

1. If you have the Pandora app on your iPhone, it will allow you to control the station off the receiver. You have access to all your favorite stations.
2. The sound is incredible. There are so many ways to control your sound. It comes with stock EQs and it allows the user to personalize his or her own EQ settings. The user can also control its loudness, bass, and sub-woofers (upto two subs).
3. The USB slot allows the users to connect USB storage devices to it. Memory sticks, storage devices, different iPhone models, and iPods and so forth.
4. The tuner is able to pull in all kinds of stations. Very good.
5. The CD slot plays CD, CD-R, and CD-RW.
6. The deck is able to display all kinds of text information for CDs, iPhones, and iPods. Album name, artist name, song name, or station name.
7. It comes with a remote control and it works great with volume control and other tasks.
8. It was fairly easy to install. It took me about an hour to do it myself.
9. It has the ability to display beautiful multiple color illumination. This was one of the main reason I bought the deck. I like my deck to display bright colors during the day but dark colors at night. For example, I use WHITE for day time display and DARK BLUE and DARK GREEN for night time display. My daughter likes pink and my wife likes red. People can pick and choose their favorite colors. There are 30 pre-set colors and the user is allowed to assign an unique color for key and another unique color for LCD display. In other words, you can display two different colors at the same time. Not only that, the user is allowed to customize the color by specifying the RGB (Red-Green-Blue) values (from zero to 60). Since there are 60 (from zero to 60) different color brightness levels and there are three primary colors (RGB), the maximum color combination is 60!/((3!)x(60-3)!)=34220. Yes, there are 34220 different color combinations for you to customize and choose from!
10. It also has an auxiliary port for portable music devices. Any MP3 players or cell phone can can plugged into the deck via the auxiliary port for your musical enjoyment.
Although it was not mentioned in the manual, I was able to play my video file and hear the sound off the deck. Additionally, I was able to play my iTune video sound off the deck. Finally, I was able to hear YouTube music off the deck. I haven't tried Netflix yet but it should be fun to be able to listen to a movie while I drive and it should be able to work.
Note: This deck does not have the blue tooth feature but frankly I don't really care for the blue tooth feature since I have multiple blue tooth headphones and regular wired headphone.
This is the best car receiver I have ever used in my life. It is beautiful.

(More customer reviews)I THOUGHT the factory installed MACH stereo in my 2000 mustang was excellent but this Pioneer brings a new level of music enjoyment to my driving. When my old cd player started acting weird, I seized the opportunity to upgrade to an IPOD compatible system. After much research I narrowed the selection down to Kenwood or Pioneer and then went to a car audio shop to test them out. The Pioneer was MUCH better sound than the Kenwood. The 4300 was a new arrival and I had not read any reviews on it but after testing it against the 2200 and the model above it (can't remember the number) I went with the 4300 for sound and ease of use. I could also more easily read the display which is important for my aging vision. The difference in sound blew me away.... I had really thought the Head unit I had was pretty darn good... it pales in comparison to this pioneer (and remember, this is not an expensive head unit AT ALL)
I have no doubt that audiofiles poo poo this stereo and so be it.. but I do have a somewhat sensitive ear and I can adjust the sound to my liking. There is a small learning curve on the controls, but not as bad as other stereos I have had with Ipod control...so... all in all..I could not be more pleased with my purchase. I bought it from the stereo shop because I was not capable or willing to install it myself. I paid a hefty price for the "free" installation ($100)which is the difference between the Amazon price and what I paid at the shop but I drove away with a whole new experience in sound... and that is worth something, yes?

Pioneer AVIC-X910BT 5.8-Inch In-Dash Navigation A/V Receiver with DVD Playback and Bluetooth Review

(More customer reviews)Bought the X910BT for my car, we enjoy traveling the back roads of Arizona and the southwest. Having the Nav system installed in the car makes things very easy - no hassle connecting the various devices, cables running all over, taking it down and putting it back up when making stops, and little "suction circles" on the windshield that thieves look for. Now I only have to fuss with the radar detector. Startup time on the unit is really not a problem, my Garmin would often take several minutes to startup, the AVIC is typically ready to go in about 1 minute. The bluetooth connection takes a little longer and the unit is very sluggish until the bluetooth connects. After the bluetooth is connected, the X910BT is very responsive.
It's a very easy unit to operate after you get used to it. My previous GPS was a Garmin unit, and I really got spoiled by their features. A few things I can complain about with the X910BT:
- Voice recognition on bluetooth - just doesn't seem to understand what I'm saying, either by name or number. I usually end up selecting the contact off the screen instead of telling it who to call. After the call has started, it works great, incoming sound is loud and clear. One person told me I sounded kind of muffled on their end, but they did not have any problem understanding me.
- Route planning is a bit of a pain if you're like me and like to take the back roads. When we travel, we like to stay off the interstate as much as possible. Disabling the Highway option makes for some very long trips as it will try to route you way out of the way to avoid highways. The AVICFeeds software is ok and I have used it to generate POIs for route planning, but it is tedious and not as easy to use as Garmin's MapSource. AVICFeeds also has a 300 item limit on POIs it can import, which means getting creative if your have a file with a large number of locations, such as those found on POI-Factory.com.
- The volume knob is really small and hard to grasp. I picked up a press on knob from a guy on AVIC411.com and it works great, easy to grasp and works the way it should have from the factory.
- The maps are very limited in the speed limit data they have. One a recent trip Southern California, we were being tailed by a CHP on one of the backroads. We were doing a reasonable speed, but the AVIC did not have any speed information for the road we were on. Additionally, many of the major surface streets in the Phoenix metro area also do not have any speed limit info available. It was very rare for the Garmin to not have speed limit data available.
I have the Sirius option installed, it works great and I listen to it more often than FM or my SD Card. I used the factory installed Sirius antenna lead to connect to the X910BT with no problem. I was able to transfer my new car subscription over and they even waived the $15 transfer fee. I also found a nice flat spot under the dash to put the GPS antenna where it is hidden and out of sight. I do not have any extra objects laying on my dash or on my roof as giveaways to what I have in my car. I ran the microphone up inside the front pillar, under the roof liner and used velcro strips to attach it to the rear view mirror. It's almost completely out of sight unless you know what to look for.
I really like he X910BT and would not go back to the portable Garmin GPS, though we still have it for use in our other vehicles and when we are hanging around planning a trip. It's great having the GPS built-in, many times we are out running around and decide to go someplace, we can enter whatever we want to find right in the GPS and it tells us where it's at.

Pioneer AVH-P3200BT In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I hadn't installed car electronics in ages, and just decided it was time to replace the factory stereo in my 2002 Toyota Highlander. I was sick and tired of juggling with the lousy sound and wires all over the place, cassette adapter, iPhone charger, Sirius radio... it was time for an upgrade. With Amazon running a sale on Pioneer car audio, it seemed it was time to jump. In the process, I learned a few things that I hope will help you make the right decisions.TIPS

1) Pioneer sells a $35 "Double DIN install kit". I'm sure it's needed in some cars, but the 3200 was a perfect drop-in in my Highlander, at least as far bolting it to the equipment chassis. The screw holes are exactly in the same place as on the Denso factory double DIN stereo it replaced,.
2) Getting a wire bundle adapter (available from Amazon, cost is under $10) simplifies the installation tremendously and makes it easy to put the original stereo back in. It's basically a connector that looks like the one on the factory stereo and has a color coded bundle of wires attached. You solder or crimp these wires to the bundle that comes with your new stereo and you're in business: it's now a perfect drop in substitute for the factory stereo. The bundle adapter is specific to your car, not the stereo you're installing.
3) Lock-out of some features (movie playing, phone number pad dialing...) is done by detecting the state of the parking brake. If you don't connect the parking brake wire, you will not be able to use these features, ever. Of course if you were a bad person you would just attach this wire to the ground somewhere, which would disable the lock-out. I'm just sayin.
4) Why are there so many iPod cables for this family of receivers? It's infuriating! There's the CD-IU50, the CD-IU50V, and the CD-IU200V. The IU50 is just a very expensive iPod/iPhone USB cord like the one that came with your iPhone. Despite what its description says on the Amazon page, it will not provide video. The IU50V will play video from the iPod (it has a USB jack and also a minijack for the video, which both plug into the front). The IU200V is similar to the IU50V but is for the 4200DVD only (according to the manual). If you want to play video from your iPhone on the 3200BT or 3200DVD, get the IU50V.
5) There's a hideous gap of 3/4" to the left and right of the receiver, and a smaller one at the top and bottom. Once again, Scosche to the rescue; they make an inexpensive kit that fills the gap. It was harder to find than I would have hoped.
Now that this is out of the way, how about performance and ease of use? Well, here goes.

- Great user interface, very responsive and easy to use.
- Displays all songs in iPhone (I used with iPhone 4), allows browsing by artist, record, song, even displays the album artwork!
- PACKED with features (supports rear view camera, second zone video, HD radio, Sirius/XM, etc...)
- Customizable theme
- Plays DiVX
- Bluetooth phone feature very easy to setup and works like a charm. Loaded the contact list from my iPhone 4 in seconds, and people I have been talking to can't believe I'm using a hands free system in a car, it's just that good.
- Convenient USB and A/V inputs in front.
- Convenient SD memory card reader
- Charges iPod/iPhone during use. You can still use your iPhone while music is playing.
- Available AVIC-U220 navigation option
CONS
----
- Screen washes out in sunlight and can get very hard to read
- Must use front connector for iPod/iPhone, so leaving a discrete connector permanently plugged in is not an option with the 3200BT model.
- No stereo bluetooth, if you need that get the AVH-P3200DVD and purchase the pricey CD-BTB200 option
- Remote control is optional
- Options are prohibitively expensive (Navigation, Bluetooth for 3200DVD and Sirius satellite radio options cost way too much)
CONCLUSION
----------
Love, love, love this receiver. It's a lot of functionality for the price, easy to install, easy to use, iPod integration is top-notch, and the minor flaws don't really warrant not giving it the five stars it deserves, considering its very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
