Nuforce NE-700M Audiophile-Grade Earphone with microphone (smoky bronze color) Review

I have been using a Klipsch S4i since Feb 2010. Last Feb, my Klipsch stopped working because the cable pulled out of the jack. It was time to go shopping for a new pair of Headphones/ear buds. I started my hunt with a pair of Monster Turbine. I was not impressed by the sound of the Turbines (even after about 100 Hrs of Burn-in). At first, I thought that it was may be the fit. I ordered the Comply Foam tips. The audio improved but it was not just there yet. Then I ordered a pair of Nox Audio Scout. The NOX was thin on bass and didn't match up with the sound I was used to from my S4i. I tried liking them, but I gave up on them. Then it was the turn of the Klipsch Image One. These sounded just like the S4i but I am not a fan of the over the ear or on ears. Finally, I came across the nuForce Ne-700 on the Head-fi.org forums. It had great reviews on Head-fi. A bit skeptical to begin with, for a company I had never heard of before. I took a chance and ordered them. They were delivered within 3 days and I was excited to try them on. Out of them box, they sounded great with a lot richer and wider Soundstage. AFter about 50 hrs of Burn-in, the Bass has opened up to a great extent. The Bass is deep and has the Punch! I could feel the vibration of the nuforce on bass heavy songs. The Bass tends to be deep and fuller without being muddy or muffled. The mids are crisp and clear. I no longer miss my Klipsch S4.
The Microphone works with the Samsung Focus and the Galaxy series. The button works as described to answer a call or Pause/skip the song. This is a welcome as the buttons on the S4i don't work with the Samsung Focus/Galaxy series.
For the price, the NuForce are an excellent option if you are in search of a pair of high quality earbuds.
At the end of my 2 month hunt, I am left with a pair of Monster Turbines, Nox Audio Scout, Klipsch Image one and the NuForce NE-700M. The nuForce are staying and the rest will be finding their way to ebay!

JBuds J4 Rugged Metal In-Ear Earbuds Style Headphones with Travel Case (Obsidian Black) Review

When I buy earbuds, the most important thing for me is the sound quality, followed by how comfortable they are in my ears. The J4 delivered on both of these. I was really impressed by the clarity of the sound and the attention to details in the design. I have had to toss other earbuds because of a flimsy jack or cheap connectors. With the J4s, it is pretty clear that they put some thought into trying to build a product that could take a beating. I have owned other JLab products and have always been impressed with their products and customer service. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for an affordable high quality set of earbuds.

V-MODA RRMT-CHROME Remix Remote Headset with 3-Button Apple Control (Chrome) Review

V-MODA RRMT-CHROME Remix Remote Headset with 3-Button Apple Control (Chrome)

First, let's get to the sound! The highs are crisp and the lows are precise and totally solid. The bass is as good as my Sony MDR-NC60 Noise Canceling Headphone and I've never heard that kind of quality from any other earbuds. In fact, throw out your old earbuds!

The hands-free microphone is very small and clips to your shirt. Your voice is clear to the other party and the call/music function is great, as when you make a call the music quickly fades away. However, I have the `iPhone 3G' and the Remix Call/Music Control and `3 button Remote' only work on the `iPhone 3GS'. It is odd talking to someone through ear-buds instead of a Bluetooth, but it's safe.
The kit comes with a pair of Sport Ear-hooks which are great in keeping your ear buds solidly in your ear with no interruption from the cords when you are walking, jogging or exercising. You also get a choice of four earbud cushion sizes, which is great. It does work with any model of iPod or MP3 players that have a 3.5mm jack (standard) and of course, it has all the fancy stuff like 24-gold-plated plugs, silicone fittings, metal construction, Kevlar cable and such. But the final word is the quality of sound. As I said, the highs are crisp and the bass is just so unbelievable in these little guys. Rock safely!

There's no such thing as a "perfect" pair of earbuds for every ear and every type of music, but these J4s come impressively close.
If the J2s had great power and punch at expense of a little balance, weight, fit, rugged durability, and treble clarity, and the J3s had amazing treble clarity, balance, weight and sturdy construction at expense of melodic bass reproduction, I can well and truthfully say that the J4 (and its mic-attached M sibling) is a true "best of all worlds" upgrade to both already impressive products. This is a truly class-defining product, and I'm blown away by it.
The glassy clear highs are slightly subdued as compared to the J3s, but the ringing liquid clarity of cymbals, hats and string pads is leagues beyond the the J2, and a little less shrill than the J3 at no discernible cost of clarity. The boost notch for mids is back to the post-J2 sweet spot, making songs like "Runway Runaway" by Duran Duran positively effervescent, the guitars and synth playing in a tightly coupled, articulate dance around one another. The bass, however, is far more skillfully realized than even the J2s managed, with a gentle notch to the low end of the bass drums and a smoother, wider boost of the melodic bass. The bass no longer wanders in and out of the "sweet" range on the characteristic Duran fretless octave jumps, and that's a problem I'd found frustrating on the J3s.
The thick, flat cables with rugged connectors are leagues beyond anything else I've used, just light enough to be comfortable and balanced well enough to feel very secure in the ears, a problem I had with the J2s. While the device-side connector is thicker than their standard, the tapered ring makes it a neat fit into even tighter cases -- I have it plugged into my iPhone4 with an Incipio Feather case, and I have no problems.
While I can tell a difference between its sound and that of my Klipsch S4is, it's no longer a difference in quality, merely in nuances of EQ and reproduction emphasis, and it's subtle. These sound like $100-$200 tier earphones, feel like them, and are markedly more durable and heavier-duty than most products in that price point.
The phone control is adequate, the mic is nice, but if JLab is listening (and they surely are, their customer support is nothing short of epic), may I ask for an addition to the J5M? Please consider on-cable volume controls. The multifunction button included is excellent -- during music playback, one click pauses or restarts, two clicks skip ahead, and three clicks skip back a track -- but I'd really love a pair of volume control buttons like the ones my Klipsch has, too. Something to consider; it'd make these buds even better.
Even at $50, these earbuds are a steal. JLab is well known for its excellent products, but this one's outstanding even for them. Don't let the price jump scare you; these buds are very much the "best in show," and hold their own beautifully against the pricier pairs.
Beautiful job on these, JLab Audio. I keep insisting there's no such thing as "perfect" earbuds, but you're really giving that claim a run for its money!

Sennheiser MM 50 iP High Dynamic Sound Earbud Headset Compatible with iPhone & MP3 Players Review

Sennheiser MM 50 iP High Dynamic Sound Earbud Headset Compatible with iPhone and MP3 Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In preparation for the new iPhone coming out in July, I needed to get a new set of headphones that included an inline mic/answer-end/pause button. After a week or so of research, I decided to try this pair, even though there is very little info or reviews regarding actual sound quality.
I switched from Sony EX-51/EX-71 headphones to the mm 50. The MM 50 iP headphones sound similar to the EX headphones I've used, with balanced sound throughout, but even better and clearer. I switched the included ear cuffs from the MM 50s for the ones I used on my Sonys, as the MM 50 set is a bit tacky and had little bits of crap stuck to them just by taking them out of the box. Ick.
The MM 50 wires are very thin, and the whole set is extremely lightweight. They are even more comfortable than the Sonys. Also, the longer I wear and use them, the more I like them.
The cord is shorter than usual, which I like because I tend to catch the wires on stuff if there is too much extra. I put the Nano/iPhone in my right back pocket, and run the headphones up to my left ear, and the length is perfect. From where the phones split (note these are "J-shaped" headphones, where the cord for the right ear goes behind your neck) to the jack that plugs into the iPhone, the cord is just over 36" long.
Currently I'm using them with a Nano, but will be switching to the new iPhone when it is released. The answer/end/ff button works fine with my current 2G iPhone, but there is a noticeable hiss at low volumes sometimes. Also, I can not get the volume from the iPhone to go low enough (I listen at the office and need to be able to hear through them) but I think this is on the iPhone side, as the Sonys don't get as quiet as they do on the Nano either.
Overall, I like the headphones, and like them more after a day of use. As long as they don't break after regular use, or have some weird problem with the new iPhone, I'll continue to use these as a replacement for my old Sony EX-51 and EX-71 sets.
Edit July 13: I got a new iPhone 3G this week, which has a redesigned headphone port. These headphones still work correctly with the new iPhone, the plug fits fine and the answer/end button works. Plus, the annoying hiss is gone!
Edit one year after purchase: These are still my daily (and only) headphones for my iPhone 3G. The play/pause/ff button still works perfectly, sound from the mic and headphones is still good, and I haven't seen any signs of wear around any connections.

I own the M6 in clear and it sounds great and stays put during workout. I bought it for working out, but liked the sound better than my other in ear headphones from V Moda and Sennheiser, so I stared wearing it when I listen to movies at night and for on the go. I decided to get the M6P for the mic/remote and am very happy with it, especially for the price. I can't believe this thing is so cheap but sounds so good. MEElectronics has made me a loyal customer with their value!

GOgroove audiOHM Ergonomic Earbuds with Interchangeable Noise-Reduction Silicone Ear Pieces Review

I bought these Earbuds for my husband to use with a new iPod Touch we gave him for his birthday. He loved the iPod but HATED the earbuds that came with it. He had a hard time fitting those into his ear and still maintaining maximum sound. The earbuds fell out of his ears when he was walking or doing things around the house. He was frustrated with the entire situation.
I wasn't sure exactly what this product would be like or if it would work when I ordered it, so I awaited their delivery a little anxiously. Once they arrived and my husband tried them, he was immediately hooked. Now I can't get him to take them out of his ears! He is listening to music, watching videos, etc., nearly constantly. He told me it was easy to fit the pieces that customized them to his ear. In addition, he has some degree of hearing loss and he told me that these earbuds gave him full, rich sound that was amazing. I listened myself and am very impressed. Much, much better than the standard earbuds. They work great when he uses his iPod to call me from overseas. The clarity for him is awesome. They do a great job of blocking out sound on the airplane as well when he just wants to enjoy his music or whatever.
Finding these earbuds for him was just what was needed to make him happy! I can highly recommend them!

Etymotic ER23-HF3-BLACK HF3 In-Ear Headsetwith 3-Button Remote Control for iPod, iPhone, iPad (Black) Review

Etymotic ER23-HF3-BLACK HF3 In-Ear Headsetwith 3-Button Remote Control for iPod, iPhone, iPad (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am somewhat of a headphone/earphone junkie. I'm always getting new 'phones, in search of "perfection" and although I can't say I have found personal perfection with the HF3s, they are close.
Before I start on the meat and potatoes of this review, I want to make a statement. A disclaimer, if you will. Sound quality is HIGHLY subjective and what sounds great to one listener, may sound like trash to another. It never ceases to amaze me how different it can be. Now, moving on.
PROS
-Sound Quality and Accuracy: These little guys are incredibly detailed and precise, if a bit bright. I am noticing things in my music that I never noticed with my previous earphones (SuperFi 4s, MetroFi 220s, Klipsch S2s, Klipsch S4s, V-Moda Bass Freqs, Multiple Sony EX series, V-Moda Phazes, Phillips SHE9700s, etc., etc., etc.). In fact, on the few songs I have encoded in a lower bitrate (128kbps), it clearly brings out the compression artifact so much that I have since deleted them off my iPod/MP3 player and found higher bitrate replacements.
-Build Quality: Build quality seems to be top notch. There's not much to note in this area, as you either have a solid piece of gear or you don't. These feel as if they will give you years of enjoyment. The cord is of high quality and restrains microphonics (Noise introduced into the ear canal by bumping or moving the cord) nicely. The buds themselves are solid plastic and have sort of a rough texture to them, making them easy to hold and insert/remove.
-Mic Quality: These are effectively the same 'phones as the hf5, but with a mic and iPod control (And are also the same as an hf2, but with a better mic and iPod control). I find the mic to be top quality and use it daily via Skype on my iTouch Second gen with compliments on my clarity. I don't use the cord-mounted iPod controls very much, as I have found, when listening to just music, these 'phones work best with my Sony S639F due to the iTouch's flat bass response (See cons). But the times I did use the controls, they worked perfectly.
-Fit: Etymotic includes 3 different pairs of tips. 2 sets of flanged tips (small and large), a set of "mushroom" tips and a set of foam tips. I have weird ears, so the only ones I could get to work, were the foam tips. But from what I have seen, most people prefer the flange type, although they have to go in the canal pretty deep and feel a bit odd at first.
CONS
-Bass Response: Bass response is a bit anemic, although quite accurate. I'm not a bass-head, but to me, the bass could stand to be boosted 3db or so. Don't get me wrong, it's not like some of the Shures with almost non-existant bass, but it could definitely stand to be a bit more pronounced. ESPECIALLY with the iTouch, which is engineered for a flat freq response. I've tried these with the iTouch, a Sandisk Fuze, a Sandisk Clip, and a Sony NWZ-S639F and found the Sony, paired with a Fiio E5 and these HF3s to be the perfect marriage. Clarity with just enough bass to be satisfying and not overpowering.
-Price. These command a premium over the regular hf5's just for the addition of the iPod controls and mic. Had I known I wouldn't be using these for music listening as much on the iTouch, I would probably have bought the hf5's instead. But for those that want an all-in-one solution to use with their iPod/iPhone products, this is a nice upgrade from the hf2's single button controls.
That's about it for the cons. I really love these phones and from what I've read, the transducers in these benefit greatly from burn-in, so I'm sure they'll warm up a bit over time and sound even more impressive. When I'm not actively listening to them, I have them breaking in using an awesome app JLab Audio has on their website. It runs various test tones and white noise to help with break in.
Unless you're a total bass-head concerned more with booming bass than accuracy and clarity, or are not as sensitive to a flat low end frequency response, I can definitely recommend these.

The hf3 is the next generation of the multi-award-winning hf2 headset. The hf3 headset adds a 3-button remote control to a Made-for-iPod/Made for iPhone/Made for iPad version of the hf2 while maintaining all the design features, exceptional noise isolation and audio clarity of the hf2. The hf3 is designed to work with iPhone, iPad and all current iPod models. The main difference between the hf2 and hf3 is the added benefit of volume control. The hf3 features a 3-button remote control pod with a close-in proximity in-line microphone that makes it easy for iPhone users to pause music to engage in phone conversations, and for iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad users to adjust volume and navigate through music tracks while in motion or on the go. ACCU-Fit features provide best-in-class fit and comfort, with four noise-isolating eartips included and a small form factor for easy insertion into ears of all sizes. The hf3's attractive, sub-$200 price level puts it within reach of consumers who care about sound quality, and its choice of three soft-touch colors add a dash of style.

Etymotic Research HF2 Earphones / Headset - Black Review

Etymotic Research HF2 Earphones / Headset - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've seen those people with earphone-mic combos for those phones - you know, *those* people who walk around, holding the mic up to their mouth, who might as well pull out the earphone and just hold the phone up to their ear. Are they uncomfortable, thinking that the mic won't pick up their voice, or are they compensating for a lackluster microphone? If the latter, that will not be necessary with the Etymotic HF2 earphone headset, whose mic is every bit as strong as the one built into most phones, if not better.
I tested this set with an Iphone 3G, and those on the other end were not able to guess that I was on a headset microphone rather than the Iphone's admittedly high-quality mic - that's a great compliment right there. The mic, which hangs about three inches below the right earphone, seems to be able to filter out background noises, as well. As for controls, it's simple - there's one button on rectangular microphone unit. Press once to answer or hang up a call, twice to send a call to voicemail.
As for sound quality of the headphones, they're fantastic, and that's no surprise given the pedigree associated with the Etymotic name. I'm an Ety fan - I have a pair of Ety ER6i as well as their "big brother" the ER4P, and the sound quality of the HF2 ranks right around the ER6i, which should be excellent for most people. Those not familiar with the "Etymotic sound," it is extremely clean, and many may find it lacking in bass, but it is very true to the recorded sound, unlike many other cheaper (and sometimes similarly priced) earphones. What you hear with Etymotics is a very accurate, if sometimes stark, representation of the sound that the artists captured. They are not good headphones for those looking for huge bass response. Those who enjoy jazz and great detail in their music might just love the Etymotic sound - they truly are an audiophile company. And when it comes to calls, there's also a small thrill to be had that first time you talk to someone and hear them in stereo through these earphones if you've never experienced it before. The world is blocked out due to the earphones' superior sound-dampening abilities, and the caller on the other end is extremely clear.
A note about fit and sound quality: these in-ear 'phone are meant to seat deep in your ear, sealed with your ear canal. When seated properly, they will deliver incredible sound quality and beautiful, solid bass - but not the deep, head-rattling bass you may be accustomed to from other head-and ear-phones. If they aren't seated properly, wet the tip just slightly, insert, and then turn just a bit to get them "snug down." The fit shouldn't hurt, but may feel odd at first. I found it took some getting used to and, yes, you will likely notice some earwax - you are, afterall, closing up your ears, so they will get warm. Clean the triple-flange tips from time to time and make sure your ears are as clean as possible. It sounds like a ritual, but it really is worth it for the extrmely high sound quality these earphones are capable of creating.
Other small details: where the two wires for the earphones connect to join into one is a slider to sinch up the wires . . . I assume if you want them close to your neck? Included on the wire is a clip that I found more annoying and cumbersome than useful. Thoughtful, yes, but not easy to remove, and I feared damaging the wire sleeve in doing so, so it stayed put. It simply made winding the wires up to put into the handy zipped leather pouch a job a little more clumsy than necessary. Also included are foam tips and smaller triple-flange tips for the earphones, replacement filters, and a filter replacement tool.
For owners of the first generation Iphone, the headphone jack is sized to fit into the recessed jack - no need for an awkward adapter.
So why only four stars if I enjoy these so much? (It would really be 4.5 stars if Amazon would let me offer it.) I balk a little at paying almost the price of the 8gb Iphone for a mic/earphone headset, even as high-quality as this one is. Another thing, and this is true of any headset, and so I don't mark this one down for it, your speaking voice does not come through the earphones. Normally that's not such an issue, but when you are listening to the other party in stereo, and you can only hear yourself as if through plugged ears, it's a little disorienting, and I found myself fighting the urge to speak louder. It would be nice if there were some way for your voice to be able to feedback into the earphones.
Overall, however, these are fantastic - miles above most typical headsets, but the price reflects that, too. If you spend a significant amount of time both listening to music and talking on your phone, and you truly treasure sound quality, these may make perfect sense.

I bought this so that I could plug both of my kids into the television to watch educational videos or play video games, and be able to work in blessed silence.

MEElectronics M31-BK In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players (Black) Review

MEElectronics M31-BK In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players (Black)
Average Reviews:

[Note: the following review is intended to match with the company's M31P-BL (the P representing the included miniature mic), whereas the pictured phones are the M31-BL (no mic!). At a quieter moment, I'll reposition the review (next to M31P-BK, since I don't see the model with mic in BL on Amazon, though apparently it can be ordered direct from the manufacturer.]
I too was suspicious of the brand when Amazon had a Gold Box special on the MEElectronics M9, which sounded like a quickly manufactured name for a mass-produced generic product. But upon receiving the phones, I knew immediately I'd gotten my money's worth. Not only were they well-built and finely detailed, but the little carrying case, cord wrapper and disentangler, 4-5 sets of extra eartips were by themselves worth the price. The driver is on the small side (9mm), but once you find the right-fitting ear-tip (small always does it for me), the bass is clearly in evidence without being boomy or intrusive.
As the pictures make all too evident, they're a handsome set. But they're good performers as well and, in my case, have held up. Even the in-line mic and iPod control work flawlessly (more than I can say for a cheap set of generic "Premium" phones and even a pair of Apple phones). Still, the cost on these will seem high to some potential users, so I can understand the cautiousness, especially about an unfamiliar brand. At the same time, I've had the earpiece of the much-publicized, pricey (twice as much as these), highly reviewed Klipsch S4 snap into two different pieces the first time I applied mild pressure while swapping out ear tips. And phones this small are always easy to misplace or snag and break (if it's a constant problem, try the Colby phones for five bucks).
Another angle worth considering, especially for the consumer who is not overly impatient, is that MEElectronics' top-of-the-line phones, the A151's (which Cnet called the best phones available for under a hundred), were recently going on Amazon for less than ten bucks more than the current price of the M31's. Frankly, if I had a choice like that, the nod would go to the A151 phones.
If you don't need the mic assembly and prefer a brand name along with guaranteed extra-high fidelity, the first phones I'd look at in this price range (we're talking IEM phones, of course, and not full-sized headphones) would be the Sony MDR-EX300LP phones. Most users would not be able to distinguish them from Sony's top-of-the-line earphones, which cost 6-10 times more.

JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (White) Review

JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While these JBUDS did not, in a side by side comparison, provide as much surrounding, warm sound as my Sennheiser 212 headphones, they provided excellent clarity, especially on KJAZZ radio. Talk formats are also excellent. The comfort is surprisingly good for an in-ear bud. For 20 dollars, this is a great substitute for the cheaper buds that come with most MP3 players.
Update on 12-21-06: I've come to be more impressed with my JBuds over the last two weeks, marvelling at the bright, crisp, and yes, warm sound that comes out of these inexpensive buds. Perhaps, as I've read in some of the headphone information that is out there, that there is a "breaking in" period, which has something to do with loosening the tranducer. In any event, I'd have to give these JBuds another star.
Second Update 10-8-07: My only complaint about the JBuds is that sleeping with them at night I will sometimes wake up and the bud will have fallen off. I can't secure the buds to my satisfaction; however, the JBuds are so comfortable I deal with this problem.
Third Update 1-7-08: The sound is not quite as good as the slightly more expensive V-Moda; however, the JBuds are easier on my ears for long-term (I sleep with them on) listening. Also the JBuds have a longer extension and don't pull out of the radio or iPod headphone jack as easily as the V-Modas, so again on balance the JBuds are better.

Sony DREX300iP Headphones Review

Sony DREX300iP Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
the ex300ip seem to me to be the alternate solution for the klipsch s4i. I wanted something that sounded as good as the s4i's w a bit more bass and better mic placement. this is the best I could find so far. I think the sound betters the s4i slightly but more importantly the mic is up closer on the chord like the orig earpbuds (except it's on the left not right which is a bit odd).
I would've kept the s4i's if the mic was placed better but people complained too much about the noise and that sometimes I sounded like i was in a tunnel or talking thru a tin can. remote on s4i is better.
I've tried almost everything with 3 button remote. btw.
the sony 38i are also good for a cheaper pair but 300's sound much better
UPDATE THEY BROKE!
aug 24th.

JBuds J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Travel Case (Titanium Silver) Review

JBuds J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Travel Case (Titanium Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the J2 earbuds before doing some serious flying beginning in mid-summer, and I was well pleased with the quality on them. My husband kept teasing me about the color--a lovely pink!--and it took some time to convince him to actually give them a listen. When he finally did, he was blown away, and caved on the idea of getting his own. Neither of us are huge audiophiles, but I'm a bit more picky about overall sound quality than he is. I still haven't found a set of iPhone speakers that I'm satisfied with after 2 years of searching.
I came to Amazon to purchase a set of J2's in white, and found that the J3 version had just been released. Reading up, I knew we needed to give these a try instead, and ordered the Titanium Silver for him.
As mentioned both in reviews and by JLab, you MUST allow these earbuds (and the J2 model) to burn in before you're going to get the fullest range of sound. Even so, my husband was utterly stunned the first time he used his new pair. He raved about them so much, I stole them for an hour to compare to my now well-used J2's, and I found improvements all the way around. Even with a fresh out of the box pair that had perhaps a few hours of burn in time, the trebles are incredibly clear, and the bass to my ear is both significantly deeper and clearer in tone. (I'm a bass girl, this was the most important thing for me.) The audible background "hiss" you can hear on older or poorer quality mp3s is even muted.
I bought a new Paparazzi Pink pair for myself that night, and my J2's have been relegated to emergency backup status. With the release of the J3, J2 models are at an exceptional price, but these are so superior that they're well worth the extra money.
Little things:
The new packaging is fabulous; I hope more companies start working with Amazon to switch over to this type of packing material.
The little case provided with the J3 model is a big plus. I have the larger case for travel and this one is way more convenient for daily use. It's small enough to slip into a shirt or jacket pocket.
Four sizes of silicone ear buds will make it much easier to fit for some. I did transfer over mine from the J2 as the material from those feels a bit thinner and I preferred the old color My husband found he was most comfortable using different sizes for each ear, so having the wider variety of sizes worked well for him. His only complaint is that even with the best fitting pair, occasionally he finds the fit to be almost too tight to the point of pressure-induced discomfort. Most of the time, it's not a problem. He did have ear issues as a child and I suspect this may be a factor, as I have had no trouble at all with either model.
For reference, both pair are being used with 1st gen iPhones for music and audiobooks. I use the EQ settings for the iPod function, he makes no adjustments.
Overall, one of the best products I've bought in any category this year!
