Apple - how about interchangeable batteries for the next iPhone? My Samsung Epix has them, and a separate charger like the Samsung Blackjack I which uses the same battery as the Epix. And improved battery power 2400 mah not 1200. My Samsung has 1800mah batteries they last for 3 days. The iPhone is used most of the time and needs more power. My Samsung always has a charged battery available, wish my iPhone did.
In all fairness I only have it 3 days and will need to follow up to this review. I gave it a 3 because of the main flaw. The power button is not recesssed in any way. I am using it with my iPone and if I keep the button facing my iPhone in an Otterman box with a rubber band to keep it from moving it usually does not turn off. But that is because the Otterman provides space between the power button and the screen. With the button on the raised surface it tends to turn itself off. As I am just testing it I was surprised that it took 8 hours to fully charge my iPhone, but did turn itself off twice for 30 minutes? It also did not show it has lost any power in charging my iPhone which is great. With the iPhone battery deep inside with no way to swap it out like my Samsung this battery may work for you. It does work well from what I saw so far. The button is really a very bad design flaw. I might try gluing something around it bit will stick to US Post Office rubber bands for now. The two USB ports will power my I phone and my portable speaker at the same time. I will report sometime down the road about actual battery life and other items that I can not post now.
I would ask anyone who has owned this item or buys it to try to post their feelings on the power button, maybe solutions. And overall time charging an Iphone and how long the product lasted them before the trash. Thanks in advance.
UPDATE 08/24/10: I used it for the second time last night. My iPhone hit 4% power at around 7:30pm. I plugged it in, used iPhone for about an hour. when I shut my iPhone off. I thought it would completely charge the iPhone to 100% overnight and would still have power left. I was surprised at 7:30am that my iPhone was at 58% and the Trent Battery was dead. I am recharging it now and will continue testing. I am still happy with the purchase, a little surprised at this turn, and not as impressed as with my first use.

I have a couple of backup systems as I spend a lot of time in remote areas without any source of power. I have a Zagg Sparq2 and while they claim it can charge a phone 4 times it never has. I have at best gotten 1 3/4 charges out of it. I decided to try the New Trent 1100 ah pack and will say that it works great! Over the past long weekend on the trail I fully charged my Droid x 4 times and the unit still has power to spare. This is with the 1880ah extended battery in the phone. It let me use my droid GPS and google maps which are far superior to my regular gps whenever I needed or wanted to. I also had no worries that I needed to conserve my battery. Since I had such poor results with the Zagg unit, which weighs the same but only has a little more than 1/2 the storage, I took it along as well as a backup. I never had to use it! The New Trent pack has earned a place in my pack and will be putting many miles on in the coming months! Between it and my solar unit I feel like I will never be without the "juice" my electronics need again! The Zagg will be on ebay this weekend!
***UPDATE***
I was going to sell the Zagg unit on ebay but I went to charge it up for the second time the prongs broke internally. I failed to mention this was the same problem I had with the first Zagg unit I received and had replaced. Same deal with the second one. Stay away from the sparq2 from Zagg. I have been so impressed with the quality of the IMP1000 I bought a second one to carry with me for extra long trips and to carry everyday on remote jobs with no power hookup.

Let's face it, the battery life on the iPhone is awful. While I don't see myself as any sort of power user, I'm lucky if I end the day with 5% left on the phone. I chose New Trent (formerly iMaxPower) because I rarely see products from any company on Amazon that are consistently rated 4 1/4 ro 5 stars across the board. Every review praised the quality of the product, and even better - the technical support.
I needed a case with battery for my new iPhone, as well as a standalone booster charger because our family is going on a 6-hour plane trip and I need the iPhone to last the entire trip. My kids are also bringing their DSi, so we needed the booster to charge that as well.
So this review covers all of the New Trent products I purchased: the IMP130, IMP550, and IMP880.
IMP130
The IMP130 is an iPhone case that contains an integrated 1700mAh battery. That battery is higher capacity (according to wiki) than the one in the iPhone 3GS (which is supposedly around 1219mAh). Capacity isn't everything; battery quality varies greatly. After using the IMP130 for a week or so, I estimate the it to effectively double my time between charges.
The IMP130 case completely covers the iPhone (other comparable cases leave the top exposed). To put the iPhone in the case, you detach the top of the IMP130 case and slide the iPhone into the bottom part, where it docks to the standard Apple connector built into the case. You then have the option to re-attach the top piece, providing protection to the top of your iPhone, or leaving it off. The only reason to choose to leave the top part off is that when the IMP130 is fully assembled, access to the iPhone buttons is difficult at best. You need to use your fingernail to mute the phone and access the volume controls. I hope New Trent addresses this in a future version. The standby button and headphone jack are much more easily accessible. NOTE: If you do decide to leave the top off the case, there is not much friction holding the iPhone in the bottom part of the case. It feels secure, but I would not trust it - I don't think the designers expected you to use it that way, but the case design is very clean even without the top piece (as if it was designed with that in mind). I find no degradation in 3G signal due to the case, nor are the speakers degraded.
Now the best part - for those of you who (like me) have a full-body Invisible Shield on your iPhone, the phone WILL stil completely fit in the the IMP130! I have not heard of that with any other case.
The IMP130 is about 3/4 the weight of the iPhone, so it almost doubles the overall weight. It also adds a bit of bulk around all sides - but provides a good feel in your hands. The texture of the case provides a good amount of grip, but I still prefer the grip the Invisible Shield provides. To me, the IMP130 case could use a little more anti-slip texture.
The IMP130 is charged through a standard Micro USB cable (included). Say good-bye to the proprietary iPhone cable. This is a very good thing. The case has an on/off switch in the bottom. When the switch is Off, you are running on your iPhone battery. When the switch is On, you are still using the iPhone battery, but it is being charged at the same time by the IMP130 battery. When the IMP130 finally gives out, the "charging" indicator on your iPhone turns off and you are solely using the iPhone battery. Whether the switch is on or off, you can still sync through the Micro USB cable. Any off-the-shelf Micro USB cable will work with this product. Here's the typical scenario: you come home with your iPhone at 90% charge and your IMP130 at 0%. You connect the cable to your PC to do your sync. The IMP130 begins to charge and the iPhone starts to charge once the IMP130 has enough juice. After a couple of hours, both are at 100%. The IMP130 has 3 LED indicators that show the current charge (100%/66%/33%/0%).
Finally - and this is a GREAT one - the IMP130 has a built-in super-bright white LED that can be used as a flashlight (say good-bye to those stupid "flashlight apps"). It also solves the problem of those impossible low-light pictures. The LED has a switch to turn it on or off.
In all, the IMP130 is really a great product. The only negative is the hard-to-access volume and mute controls. And remember, if you have an Invisible Shield full body wrap, it WILL fit in the case nicely.IMP550
While the IMP130 is great, there's no way it will take the iPhone on a 6-hour flight of pure video and 3D games. So that's why I also got the IMP550. This is a brand new product from New Trent. It's the big brother of the IMP130 (much bigger in fact). It has a very large 5500mAh capacity. That pretty much quadruples the iPhone battery.
Unlike the IMP130, this case does not fully enclose the iPhone; it leaves the top exposed - granting easy access to all of the iPhone buttons. The case is lined with a velvety material which not only feels neat, it helps keep the iPhone in place. An iPhone with a full-body wrap Invisible Shield DOES fit in the case.
Also unlike the IMP130, the sync interface is not Micro USB, but rather standard Apple. That means there is no cable included with the IMP550; you can use your original cable that came with your iPhone.
Because this is a serious battery, the case adds serious weight to your iPhone, as well as bulk - mostly overall thickness. However, unless you have very small hands, I think you will find that the case feels much more comfortable in your hands than the iPhone itself. I find it to be quite ergonomic. I also find the grip of the IMP550 to be slightly superior to that of the IMP130.
The IMP550 does not have an on/off switch; it provides a charge to the iPhone when it needs to. Like the IMP130, you will charge both the case and the iPhone while you are connected to your PC, wall charger, or car charger.
Personally, I don't think the IMP550 is suited to be a full-time case solution for your iPhone. It is simply too bulky and heavy for that (as is any other 5000+ mAh battery case). It's great for long trips, golf courses, or any other time you will not have access to a charger for many many hours.
Sadly, the IMP550 has no flashlight LED (maybe on their next revision?). Three LEDs indicate charge, and a fourth tells you if the IMP550 is charging your iPhone.
In summary - another 5-star product.IMP880
When I am on that long trip, my iPhone is covered by the IMP550. But what about my kid's DSi and my wife's smartphone (not everyone has an iPhone)... New Trent has that covered, too. The IMP880 is a standalone battery that charges a multitude of devices. It has a staggering 8800mAh of capacity - almost two IMP550 worth, or roughly 6-7 times the capacity of an iPhone. That's some serious capacity. The unit is quite small - about the size of a man's wallet. It weighs about the same as a man's wallet (before a Vegas trip).
Four LEDs indicate battery charge and a Test button lets you know the current capacity. NewTrent made a Youtube video demonstrating this unit. In that video, they say you need to turn the unit on by holding down the Test button for 5 seconds before you charge something. I find that the unit always charges a device if needed; maybe I have a newer revision.
The battery may be small, but the wall adapter used to charge the IMP880 is not. The Youtube video shows a nice, small wall-wart. My unit came with a very bulky in-line AC adapter. It is larger than the IMP550 itself. Not a big deal, but much larger than I expected. Remember, the AC adapter is something you pack in your suitcase; you carry the small IMP880 on the plane fully charged.
The IMP880 can charge a variety of items, and has several ports:
DC-IN jack connects to the AC adapter. This is how you charge the IMP880 from the wall.
DC-OUT jack is only used for charging specific notebook PCs. My unit included a cable for this, but I am not certain NewTrent will support notebook charging going forward. I do not see notebook devices listed as charge targets any longer on their website.
Type-A USB connector is used to charge your iPhone, Blackberry or DSi.
At this point, I need to speak about the USB cable that is included with the IMP880. The IMP880 replaces a smaller charger called the IMP500. This was the workhorse of the imaxPower line of products. In fact, the IMP550 is basically the IMP500 designed into an iPhone case. The reason I bring up the IMP500 is that - like the IMP880 - it charges devices through a USB cable. This cable has a standard USB-A connector on one end, and a generic adapter on the other. You can configure the cable for different devices by connecting a different plug on the adapter end. That way, you can use the USB cable to charge an iPhone, or Blackberry, or DSi, etc. The USB cable that was included with the IMP500 had a FEMALE adapter on the end. All of the flavors of connectors had a male adapter. The USB cable that is included with the IMP880 has a MALE adapter on the end. All of the flavors of connectors have a female adapter.
So what does this mean? For me, it meant a slight problem when I tried to use the IMP880 to charge my kid's DSi. You see, neither the IMP880 nor IMP500 come with a DSi adapter. Not a problem - the website clearly points that out. So when I purchased the IMP880, I also bought the only DSi adapter they sold (it was about $5). Unfortunately, that adapter is male, and only fits the IMP500 cable. It will not fit the USB cable that came with the IMP880.
My solution was to then buy an IMP500 USB cable...Read more›

The imax power IMP500 has been a lifesaver. I first use it on a trip flying to New York
and it didn't disappoint. The battery power makes that little bunny look weak. I watched Dark Knight movie and played games on my ipod touch and when we landed it still had plenty of battery reserve. The set up was easy and I have been using it for over a year and I don't have any problems or complains at all. I wish more products worked this well.

I love my Iphone 3G. It seems every day I find something new it can do. But all the function comes with a price - really lousy battery life. The darn thing drains like a sieve when I use wireless - which is a pain as that is often the fastest connection and offers the best flexibility when using all those fantastic Apps.
So I started to hunt down external batteries - especially for those long flights when I was in the middle of an audio book or new series of TV shows and blimmpppp there goes the battery. The first one I tried cost me $80 and never got to a full charge on the Iphone, only giving me an additional 3 hours of battery- big whoop - I still couldn't make it overseas. I tried another that promised 20 hours but it actually drained the Iphone!!! So imagine my surprise to find this Tecyer that cost half the price and charges like a champ! It is a fast charge too. I can't say how long it lasts but I have gone past 25 hours using video and audio and it hasn't run out. It got me back and forth across the country, over to Germany and France and now I plan to take it to South America. I highly recommend this unit. It is slightly smaller than the Iphone and lighter, and because it doesn't connect directly onto the Iphone but through a cord I can keep the phone in its case.
As for the Kindle - it has a great battery life, but it is great to have a backup should you forget to charge it. I read about this trick on a Kindle blog - and I bought the USB Sync Charge Cable (for Palm Zire 31 72 Tungsten E) and I now use this adapter cable to connect to the battery pack and it successfully charges my kindle! I love it when I get multifunction out of a unit!

The Satechi iCell does exactly what claims: Completely charge a mostly or entirely depleted iPhone 3GS 3-4 times before it itself needs to be recharged.
The unit is very roughly the size of a long, thick and narrow bar of soap. You wouldn't want to carry it in your pocket but it can be dropped into a briefcase, equipment bag or large purse with no problems.
The device is simplicity itself: You charge your iPhone just as you normally would, but end of the cable that normally goes into a computer USB plugs instead into the iCell. The iCell's own power level is clearly displayed by five bright green LEDs.
One thing to be aware of: You can't charge the iCell just by plugging it into the wall. You need to plug it into a powered USB slot or the Apple USB power adaptor, which turns any wall socket into the equivalent of a powered USB slot. And the iCell requires a special cable to charge, which Satechi provides together with a convenient drawstring bag. Not a huge deal but slightly inconvenient and the charging cable is one other thing you need to carry and worry about losing.

I bought a couple of these battery packs thinking they were identical to other 5000 mah battery packs but they are not. I bought two of these last spring and I liked their ability to charge my phone at the same time the battery pack was being charged. If you only have one USB port it is important to be able to charge both this battery pack AND your iPhone at the same time. As I said earlier, I had already bought ywo of these units before and they COULD charge both at the same time. But the battery packs sold by this Amazon seller DO NOT work like the battery packs I bought 7 months ago.
It is more convenient to charge both the battery pack and your iPhone at the same time. But when you are charging this battery pack it CUTS OFF all power to anything connected to it. I don't know why this item looks identical to other battery packs when it obviously is designed differently, and not as good. Perhaps this unit is from a batch of defective or poorly engineered units. I dint know. When I presented this problem to the merchant I did receive prompt responses but they could not explain the two different designs, or the flawed design of the ones they are selling.
Another problem with this battery pack happened when the rubber stopper to protect the USB port just fell off after opening it twice.
If you are wanting a 5000 mah battery pack make sure it's one of the good ones, and not like this unit that doesn't provide power to your iPhone while you are charging the battery pack. I requested replacements for the 2 battery packs but I haven't heard anything from the merchants since I asked for battery packs that worked like the battery packs I bought 7 months earlier.
Note: There are other companies offering battery packs that are almost 20% more powerful than these units so I'd check them out before buying these battery packs. There is one battery pack that even has two charging ports instead of just one so if you like versatility then it will be to your benefit to search for a better product.

We bought this product for our iPhone 3G and it worked fine. However, we noticed that the battery would drain very quickly when we plugged it into the iPhone 4 that we recently purchased. I confirmed with Kensington that this item is not compatible with iPhone 4, so I thought I'd share this in case you are looking for a battery charger for your iPhone 4. Otherwise, it works great with the other generations of iPhone. Kensington did mention that a charger may be available for iPhone soon, but they wouldn't/couldn't advise as to when such an item will be available.
