The Purchase:
After alot of research, I decided to purchase this Motorola XT701 from Amazon last year (Amazon has a great return policy). Phone looked good when it arrived. There are different versions of this phone, the one I received was the Chinese/HK version. Unlike other 'new' phones as told in other Chinese Motorola forums, the menus didn't start in Chinese (like other Chinese/HK XT701s) - More on this later. After a quick charge, I popped the AT&T SIM card in and poof it worked. It'll work on AT&T & Tmobile. It'll work on AT&T's 3G network. It won't work on Tmobile's 3G/4G network. I did have some problems sending MMS. After re-entering the AT&T settings a couple of times it finally started to work.
Suggestions:
Add $100+ for a SquareTrade ADH Warranty. YOU WILL NEED IT. You'll need to update the phone (to Android 2.1) as soon as you get it. The built in keyboard is $&^+ (it's a English/Chinese style keyboard) - you'll want to download another one from the Android store. I'd suggest tossing the supplied MicroSD card. It's slow. Buy another one thats at least a Class 6 or better.
What's great:
1. Cool design.
2. 3G speed
3. Thin & lite
4. Apps
5. Camera + a REAL flash
6. Easy to root
What isn't great:
1. Keyboard
2. Screen - taps are unresponsive at times
2. Internal memory / App storage limit
3. Physical camera button - hard to get to
4. Phone freezes / lags - it can't keep up with ALL the bells and whistles (live wallpaper, etc)
5. No custom ROMs (its not a popular phone)
6. Getting lied to - first by Motorola, then (possibly) by the seller.
Lie #1 - When I bought the phone, Motorola stated it planned on updating the phone to Android 2.2. After saying yes then no then maybe then yes to Europe, but not China, and now no to all xt701s. If I knew this before I bought it, I wouldn't have made the purchase. Android 2.2 would solve ALOT of nagging issues with the phone. First, Android 2.2 is faster than Android 2.1. Much faster. An update would get rid of some of the lag (due to the slower the slower processor) when taking pictures, videos, running live wallpaper, etc. Second, the ability to store Apps onto the SD card. With Android 2.1, I hit the App memory limit within 2 weeks of owning the phone. Third, better keyboard and multi-touch responses. The list goes on.
Don't buy this phone if you're a power user. It will disappoint you.
Lie #2 - I treat my phones very good. For this phone, I bought an SGP XT720 case for it (one of the very best phone cases). About a month ago, the phone started to go crazy acting like someone/something was tapping the screen, making selections, dialing numbers etc. For awhile, I thought someone hacked the phone. Factory resets didn't solve the problem. This craziness evolved into a part of the screen being dead to touch. A vertical strip about 3/8" (1cm) wide located on the right side of the screen was dead. The phone was barley usable. I know its not covered in the US, but I took chance and brought it a certified Motorola repair center who told me - yes, the screen was dead, no its not covered by Motorola US and by the way, the phone looks like its been opened before (tool marks) and the screen in there doesn't have a Motorola P/N on it - hinting that it was some generic screen replacement. Which means, I didn't get the "gorilla glass" screen that Motorola had advertised. It was made known to me that this "new" phone could be a Chinese/HK refurbished phone being sold as "new" to unsuspecting US customers. It apparently happens all the time with International "No Warranty" phones. Going back to my first paragraph about the language being switched from Chinese to English when I purchased it doesn't help me believe that the phone was new and untouched between the factory and my door. Alas, I can't "prove" that it's a refurb except from what the tech told me (and the gut reaction to how greedy people can be). I really hope its a refurb because I would hope (as a Motorola fan) this isn't the way Motorola puts an expensive phone like the XT701 together. Apparently, there are many many instances of this screen issue happening to the Milestone/Droid community. As the Moto tech described, the Droid and the xt701 screen use the same technology. So this could be a defect (or the result of a bad batch of screens, or a real design flaw). It doesn't help that Motorola dropped support for this line like a hot potato late last year. When I bought it in September, the phone wasn't out in the market for that long. Two months later and Motorola started to drop planned upgrades, accessories, patches, etc.
Don't buy this phone if you're looking for a sturdy product. Do buy this phone if you'll plan on spending another $200-300 on extended warranties, cases, and a backup phone for when it randomly dies.

Conclusion:
While when I bought this phone, I considered it a 5 star product. Looking back, I see that I put up with the little issues knowing that they were going to be fixed in the next software & firmware updates. Now that I know these things won't be fixed (no updates whatsoever), it's not worth the money. Seriously. If you're going to drop $350 ~ 400 for a phone, you'd expect for it to be refined OR at least have a way to get issues resolved. No support from Motorola for software/ firmware/ warranty makes this a bad gamble. There isn't a third party community for it. So there isn't much indirect, community support either. The warning from the tech about the International refurb phones sold to North Americans as "new" isn't surprising. It's happened to me with "new" Motorola phones from eBay in the past, but I really wasn't expecting it from Amazon.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If I were in your shoes, I'd look elsewhere.

Motorola DROID X2 Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

Motorola DROID X2 Android Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got my Droid x2 on May 20th. I came from a Droid X, and previously a Droid 1. Even though this phone is not running Gingerbread yet, the Menus, and interface are much improved over the original Droid X. The Screen can be described as richer. It has more contrast, and the colors are better. The Camera is Much faster, and I feel takes much nicer pictures than the X. One major advantage for me is that it fits in my Car Dock, and my cases. How many times have you changed phones only to have to buy all new accessories. If you are just moving to a Droid phone, this is the fastest phone on the market now. I see people crying that it is not 4g.. I have never felt there was anything I could not download fast enough. My 3G Streams video, loads games, you name it. If I have something big to download, the phone is great on WiFi.. and the DX2 is even faster there. The Battery seems to be about the same even with the much faster Processor.
Like the Ad says the Droid does.. and the Droid X2 does twice as fast.

Samsung Gravity Smart Android Phone, Sapphire Blue (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Gravity Smart Android Phone, Sapphire Blue (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

I tried this phone out at the T-Mobile store, too bad they didn't have a working model otherwise I would have gone with something else. The volume button gets in the way when I use the key pad for texting, the screen touch keypad has very small letters and with my fat fingers its difficult to get the right letter. One last dislike, I traded a Blackberry in with a track ball because the ball sucked, well I just got a new problem with the slide, you see I get dirty hands with work and moving parts are just a pain. Too bad I didn't think about it a little longer.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY Android Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not going to spend a lot of time listing 'specs' because Amazon's page has them all, well organized and in detail. Instead, I will discuss our experience with the PLAY from a gamer's point of view because I can't see anyone but a gamer considering this.
BRIEF ASSESSMENT
The Xperia PLAY attempts to combine an advanced Android phone with a portable gaming platform resembling the PSP or rather the PSP Go hoping that the integrated whole will turn into something more than the sum of its parts but, in my view, what we get is a good, solid gadget that fails to come close to 'best in class' in either the smart phone or the portable gaming platform categories. There are many smart phones that outperform it (better, faster, dual-core CPUs) and outfeature (4G, HDMI, DLNA support) the Xperia PLAY and, while it superficially resembles the PSP Go, the PLAY only accepts games specifically converted to work with it, meaning that you'll have to buy them again and, at least at the time I am writing this review, it can't access Sony's PSN store. While you can play Android games, you will need to find 'PLAY optimized' titles if you are to take advantage of the PSP-like game pad.THE GOOD
Again, neither the phone component or the PSP-like transformation are bad, they are quite good and here is what I liked about them:
- Android 2.3. It's not the latest in Android but I was assured that upgrades are forthcoming.
- Decent battery life. Sure, you can't play or stay on the phone forever but unless all you do is play and stay on the phone all day one charge per day should be sufficient.
- Good 'game pad' integration. You go into 'game mode' the moment you pull out the pad.
- Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi available and working well. Also a microUSB port.
- Very nice stereo speakers. They work well with the games and, as a bonus, you get better than decent sound in 'speaker phone' mode.
- A couple of very nice preloaded apps: Kindle, Google Maps, YouTube, Skype Mobile,Twitter and Facebook integration.
- 8GB microSD card included but you can replace it with a larger one, of course.
- PSP Go like controls including some innovative implementation of the 2 analog joysticks as touch-pads.
- Lots of preloaded games (I will list them at the bottom of this review)THE BAD
- Single-core CPU makes it a relatively slow performer as a smart phone.
- Lack of HDMI port and DLNA support makes it a poor multimedia gadget.
- The display is not that bright, probably to conserve battery life.
- The cameras are okay but barely so and the flash is not that bright.
- The touchpads meant to replace the analog joysticks are not always responsive.
- As a phone, it's a little on the bulky side.
- Not all Android games can be played in the game mode. It's confusing and it can be frustrating.
- Can't play PSP or PSOne games unless adapted, meaning that you need to buy them again.RATING
I am going to give the PLAY 3 stars which means "it's Okay". It's an interesting concept and it works to some degree but someone who wants an Android phone and a serious portable gaming platform may be better off with an actual Android phone and a PSP or a PSP Go. I am giving it 3 stars and not 2 stars because my kid (the one who didn't have a PSP) decided that it was good enough for him and he's using it now. Thanks to the large number of preloaded games and to the availability of some PLAY-friendly Android games we didn't have to buy any old games again yet.___________________________________________________
These are the game that came preloaded:
* Adrenalin
* Asphalt 6
* Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior
* Crash Bandicot
* Madden NFL 11
* Star Battalion
* Tetris (Android mode only)
* The Sims 3

Android Gingerbread Operating System
The Xperia PLAY runs the Android 2.3 operating system (dubbed "Gingerbread")--the fastest version of Android available for smartphones yet. Multitasking in Gingerbread allows you the ability to run more than one app at a time. A new onscreen keyboard makes it easier to type thanks to additional spacing between the keys and larger font sizes. And the more you use the keyboard, the easier typing will be as the enhanced suggest feature records previous input history to make better suggestions.

And like the previous version of Android ("Froyo"), Gingerbread provides support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for access to the full Web.

The Xperia PLAY also brings one-touch access to the popular Google mobile services you use every day, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps with Navigation, Google Calendar, Picasa, and YouTube. Samsung Exhibit 4G Android Phone, Violet (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Exhibit 4G Android Phone, Violet (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I upgraded from the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide to the Exhibit 4G. As I get into this review, I should explain that I'm not a phone connoisseur, nor am I extremely technically-minded. Take this review as the opinion of a modestly tech savvy consumer who's on her second SmartPhone.
I appreciate the sleek design of the Exhibit. The screen size, however, is passable but on the small side, which can make keypad input a little tricky (it's better in landscape mode.) Swype makes text entry a bit easier, but I find I'm often having to correct the predictive text.
The charger input is on the top of the phone. You might not think to consider this problematic...until you attempt to hook the phone up to a car charger while it's seated in a window mount device holder. I had to purchase a new car charger with a longer cord to accommodate this quirk, and it's still not quite ideal. (Yes, I can seat the phone in landscape mode, but I prefer not to; consider that MY quirk.) All things considered, though, this is a minor glitch.
The phone's menus are easy to navigate and well laid out. T-Mobile includes a lot of bloated extra apps, which you can't remove without rooting the phone, but that's not the phone's fault, it's the carrier.
Battery life is actually better than I expected. When I'm not using the phone frequently (as when it's on the bedside table overnight) the battery barely registers a dent in the charge level. With average daily use I've never been able to drain the battery over a 24 hour period. Yes, expect to charge the phone every night, and expect to keep it on a car charger if you're using battery-sucking apps such as the GPS, but otherwise don't worry that you'll be out of juice before day's end without a charge.
I've had my phone for a couple of weeks and haven't had any issues with it. I'm satisfied with its functionality, design and style. If you're looking for a mid-level SmartPhone at a decent price it's likely the Exhibit will meet your needs and then some.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini E10i Unlocked Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Android OS, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth--International Version with Warranty (Black/Red) Review

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini E10i Unlocked Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Android OS, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth--International Version with Warranty (Black/Red)
Average Reviews:

This is nice hardware. It works well with AT&T in the USA. There's no Android upgrade for it. Sony Ericsson (SE) put out a press release in October say upgrades to Android 2.1 had started. If that was not a bold-faced lie, there's a sin of omission because my X10 mini is no upgrade available according to the PC software SE put out. There's no Mac equivalent of this software either :-(
Upgrade is out now (Dec 24th). Had to update PC-Companion software first. First time through my internet connection died while the newer PC-Companion software downloaded Android 2.1. Inexplicably the 1.6firmware on the phone is wiped before the 2.1 version is downloaded. Thus my phone is presently bricked. After reconnecting and starting over with the non-functioning X10-mini, I am stuck on [...]. How long should I wait here SonyEricsson ? An hour? A day ?
Update Jan/2011: Its upgraded now. Had to try multiple times to get the PC Companion to push Android 2.1 onto it. It works well now. Sim swapping between UK and US is easy. 3G works. Much much cheaper in the UK (Virgin) than the US for a 3g pay as you go service. I even got tethering working so I could use it on the train over Xmas.
It is sad to hear there will be no 2.2 update for Android for this phone.
Feb 12: Software Update failed 3x. I have a decent connection to the internet, and was not running anything else at the time. Why can't the Sony Ericsson software tell me why the update failed ?
Mar15: Software update worked. This time the PC installer updated itself too. That was on the third attempt though. For a month now the volume level the supplied headphones has been too low to hear at full volume. I've googled for causes but can't find any. I'll see if new headphones work for it.
Apr 3: It is not the headphones, its the phone. The headphones (and replacements) work fine in other devices (like a MacBook). The loudspeaker is plenty loud enough in the phone, but the output to the headphones is whisper quiet at full volume. I'm going to try to get Sony to repair it, even though it's six months old.

This phone is all about you determining what you need first. I have been a Nokia fan for more than 9 years now, all Nokia phones(and 1 Samsung to be honest!). i was looking 4 another Nokia since i lost mine on a plane last month, then i saw this one & it was love from first sight! Stylish, cute, but don't let it fool u!This phone is far more capable than you think, I could easily compare it to any HTC or iphone!i tried the iphone not the HTC though..
1st the screen is gr8, the touch is soo smooth, difficult if you have big hands though, if you dont buy, you won't be able to enjoy this phone. the full keybord is really good, the Android market..what can i say...endless fun & applications...the camera has really good photos, the phone is sooo handy...though i gave it 5 stars coz i got it for less than this price from a friend..but for its real price ( $250 ) i would give it 4 stars..still good *edit* the screen after a couple of month is rather smaller than it should!unless u like small stuff, when u compare this screen to an htc aria(3.2" instead of the 2.6' on this phone) the difference is HUGE !
Nothing is perfect of course, the cons:
- the battery lasts for only a day, a full complete day if you install application killer from the market also when u use the battery power app, it was installed on my phone as well, it lets u control the bluetooth, wifi, background data and LCD light all in 1 touch which is so convenient.
- the 2nd problem was the bluetooth, u can't receive and send files through bluetooth except if you install the bluetooth app from the market, which isn't gr8 as well *edit* upgrade to 2.1 version solved this problem ( but i wouldn't recommend this upgrade over all, it slowed the phone down a bit)
These were the only problems i found till now ( after almost 2 weeks)..i hate those bulky new phones they are releasing everywhere, so this just so conveneient 4 me
bottom line, if you are ok (better,if u like them!)with small phones, and want one capable of doing ALL the smartphones do, then buy this one..but if you have a problem dealing with small LCD or charging the phone almost everyday (which i was used to do the past 3 years withh all my Nokia phones, the N80, N85 & N97 mini!) then it is gonna be hard 4 u to get used to it!
*edit* The plastic-look of this phone( even though some might like it) takes down its rating, even for the price! when u take the back cover off, u see a slim phone that would have looked gr8 with a metal back or something, also could have been much slimmer, instead Sony Ericsson added a curved plastic back that adds real bulk to the phone for no reason! this takes the rating even to less than the 4 stars given!

LG KC910 Renoir Touch Screen 8MP Camera Wifi GPS Unlocked Tri Band (Black) Review

LG KC910 Renoir Touch Screen 8MP Camera Wifi GPS Unlocked Tri Band (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the LG KC910 Renoir - Unlocked QuadBand Cellular Phone - 8 MP Camera, GPS, WiFi, FM Radio - International Version with No Warranty for about a week, and it's been a relatively good experience. At first, there was a bit of a learning curve; however, in the end, I have decided that this is a great phone. The problems I encountered dealt with the charger I received, setting up the Internet, and the auto-lock feature.
First, the charger. When I received the phone last week I discovered one fatal flaw with my purchase, the wall charger was made for charging this phone in another country (I'm in the US). Fortunately, you can charge your phone via a USB cable to your computer. I also ran into trouble with this, but as it turns out, I was using the wrong USB slot. The USB slot on the right only kept the phone alive (it wouldn't charge the battery); fortunately, the USB slot on the left would charge the phone. Whatever. You can easily find a wall charger for this phone at a retail store if you want.
The auto-lock feature isn't a bad idea; sadly, it can be incredibly annoying. I suppose this was made to keep you from accidentally dialing 911 or something. But it doesn't really work right. The solution? Just turn it off; your touch screen will go into sleep mode when you're not using it, and it will not come on if you touch the screen. It will come on if you push one of the three buttons on the bottom of the phone. Still, it would be incredibly difficult to accidentally dial 911 or something even without the auto-lock feature. Unfortunately, if you have to call and push buttons on your phone during your conversation, then the auto-lock still comes on. You just have to push the auto-lock icon, and it will go away (at least for a while). I don't know if that part of the auto-lock system can be turned off. Strange, I know.
Ah, the Internet settings. I'm using AT&T, and transferring the sim card into this phone was easy. The phone immediately worked when it came to calling people. By the way, reception was great for me. I've read about people who said the call quality was lacking. I don't know about their experience, but I had no problems. Anyway, the Internet is the one part of the phone that wouldn't work. I finally stumbled upon how to do it the other day, and it works great now. Here's how I got the Internet to work:
Phone Setting>Connectivity>Access Point: (Data Setting)
Title: Att
Bearer: GPRS
Auth: PAP
User: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (all caps)
Password: CINGULAR1 (ALL UPPERCASE)
APN: wap.cingular
Browser>Settings>Profiles: (Internet Setting)
Service Name: Media Net
Homepage: http://www.google.com
Connection mode: TCP without proxy
IP: (blank)
proxy: (blank)
Security: (blank)
Access Point: ATTI can't guarantee that the above code will work for you, but it's worth a shot.
Other Thoughts -
The camera phone is great (not dslr quality but good), the battery is okay, the touchscreen is decent, the eight gigabyte chip (microsdhc class 4) works well, sound quality is good, the included headphones are worthless; wifi works well. Is this phone an iPhone killer? Probably not, but it's definitely close.
Week Two Update -
It appears that the LG wall charger I bought at the retail store may have ruined my battery. It was exactly the same as the one that was sent with my phone, other than the fact that it works in the US instead of England. I managed to find another battery online, so hopefully this will correct the problem. It does seem that the battery I've been using has been problematic. I've only successfully charged it with the usb port on my computer, and that was tricky as well. So be careful when you charge this phone in the US.
Final Update -
The battery is working properly now. Not sure what happened but I wont be using that wall charger again. Everything else is good.

HTC Trophy Windows Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

HTC Trophy Windows Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(POTENTIAL W7Phone buyer...this is a great phone...but, read complete review and read the end for an important issue associated with hooking up to your Outlook account at work...)
Okay - so, I've been jonesing for a new phone for work. Have Blackberry Tour(because old company is a Blackberry company). Come to new company where they're "more lenient" on the technology you can have. So - started trying phones (I love Verizon's 30 day satisfaction guarantee). First one: iPhone - sexy in an Anna Kournikova way (no one can debate that Apple has top-notch industrial design) - but, ultimately, an iPhone isn't for a business guy. Cool apps (and alot of them)...but, seriously - most companies use Outlook Exchange and MS Office...and there's the problem: Apple doesn't like to play in the same sandbox. Stable platform, tons of apps, pretty to look at...but won't win Wimbledon - because the integration between business programs (Office, Outlook, etc) isn't there. Scheduling a multiple-person-invite calendar event? Holy... Droid: depending on the review - possibly stable platform...but, seriously - the app integration is all over the place - depends on the platform (verizon, sprint, t-Mobile, etc), the manufacturer, and the app itself. Tons of apps...but, it, too, isn't MS. Blackberry? The only reason it's still alive is because of the Blackberry Enterprise Server which allows monster Enterprise companies to remote-zap the blackberry if you leave the company with Blackberry in hand, and sensitive e-mails/contact information in said Blackberry...but, they are so behind on apps and touchscreen integration it's scary. But, if you want e-mail and calendar and that's it...It's the phone for you. If you want more, and have friend iPhone envy or droid envy...just wait, my friend...just wait...
...for the HTC Trophy W7 Phone!!! Just got it, have played with it for two days now. I can only say...WOW. From a "user friendly" standpoint - it's as close as MS is gonna get to an iPhone without pissing off Steve Jobs. It uses tile icons much like the iPhone and Droid which can be moved around, pinned to the Start screen, deleted from the start screen. But, what is different is that some of the tiles (not all) are what Microsoft calls "Live Tiles", and they give you a real-time data feed as to what's going on behind the tile (in the app itself). The Live Tiles (so far) are "Phone" (missed calls/voicemails), "Outlook", "Hotmail" (not sure about Yahoo or Google mail), "Messaging" (texting). So - if you have four e-mails that have popped into Outlook...the Outlook tile will have a number "4" on it. Once you tap the tile...the app launches...you do your thing (read, delete, respond, stare at the e-mail in shocked amazement as to the off-color joke your boss just sent to the company-wide distribution list) and when you close it, the tile resets to zero again. This way you can see at a glance what's going on in your business and personal and communication life.
The tiles are also "contextual" in nature...and this is where the phone really starts to depart from the iPhone and the Droid offerings.
Tap a tile (let's say, People) - it allows you to see, pull, edit, etc. ANY person that you deal with - it pulls your contacts from Outlook. It pulls your friends from Facebook. It pulls your contacts from Windows Live/Hotmail. If you tap Outlook - and pull up an e-mail that someone (in your contact list...or in facebook, or in Windows Live) sent you...you tap on their name...and BAM - their contact information pulls up (see "People tile" above)...whatever you've loaded in on whatever platform you are using...it assumes, at this point, that you now want to contact this person in some fashion (contextual link) - which is why it does this. So, if a friend sends you an e-mail...you can reply to the email or tap their name and CALL them. Same with Music/Video, Pictures...if you have it, anywhere, on any MS system that you use (on phone, in Windows Live, in Zune, on Facebook)...you can access it on the phone. It assumes that, if you want to see "pictures" - that you want to have access to ALL pictures. If you want to search for People...you want to search for ANY person you have dealt with on any platform you have their information on. But, where it gets really cool is the ability to launch into different, linked contextual apps because of what it assumes you want to do. If you search for a People in your phone (tap the People tile, tap the Search magnifying glass icon and enter their name) - once you find that person, you can then call, facebook, or send an e-mail.
...which brings us to the next cool Contextual link: When you tap their e-mail address...it opens a new window giving you a choice to send an e-mail from ANY e-mail app that you've got running on the phone: Outlook, Hotmail/Live, Google, Yahoo.
...someone sends you a contact .vcf card via e-mail. You can open that card, save it...and it prompts you: Save it to Windows Live or Outlook...at which point it then pushes that information to Outlook or Live/Hotmail.
Seriously. This is some pretty cool integration. Again, contextual. It has been designed to shift gears based off the direction you are heading.
And, the contextual function is also geared around the way the "search" function has been designed. If you are in People...you search for People...all people...everywhere, on any platform that synchronizes to the phone. If you are in E-mail..you are searching for any word/person/subject in the e-mails that the phone has access to. If you are in the Marketplace, searching for some apps...you search for any app you wish. The Magnifying glass icon on the front of the phone changes, depending on the context of what you're searching for
Takes a little while to get used to...but, when you do...you start realizing the possibilities.
One of the "cool things that MS actually considered"I (and most people) have multiple places where I have contacts. I have "friends" on Hotmail/Windows Live. I have business contacts in Outlook. I have friends, also, on Facebook...and some of those friends are both Outlook Contacts and/OR Live/Hotmail contacts. So, the same person may exist in three distinct contact platforms. If you are like me, and have segmented your work/play life (I DO NOT want to lose all of my "friends" if I'm ever fired or leave the company that is providing me with Outlook) so that personal friends are on a "non-office" platform (Hotmail, in my case), and work contacts or work associates exist on an "office" platform (Outlook)...when you see the contact information in the People Tile - you will see three (or more) contacts: one from Facebook, Live, and Outlook. Once you have one of them pulled up, you can then LINK them together in the People tile so that they show up as ONE contact in the phone on ONE card - with all of their information from each platform showing up under ONE uniform contact. And, if it is an MS platform that the information is housed on (Outlook/Live)...if you edit the information on the phone...it will synchronize and edit the same information across platforms. Whoa. Haven't tested Yahoo and Google since I don't have e-mail accounts with either...so, could not advise as to whether you can SYNCHRONIZE with those other platforms...but, I do know that you can link the information from those platforms. Whoa.
With the exception of a couple of MS "headscratcher" software "gaps" that you may have heard about (no cut-and-paste on the original W7 phone rollout a year ago? Seriously?)...most of those gaps have been fixed (cut-and-paste IS on the HTC trophy)...and the rest that I haven't identified yet (so may not be all that important) should probably get cleared up on their Mango update that is coming out sometime in October. (UPDATE: Mango did not fix one major gaff: if the person's e-mail is NOT in the phone...you cannot send a calendar invite via e-mail to that person. Their e-mail information MUST be in the phone under one of the platforms that is integrated (facebook, Live/Hotmail, Outlook, Yahoo/Google)...otherwise...you CANNOT send an e-mail to that person. Weird.
This is a kick-rear phone. If you don't want an iPhone...or had one like me and ultimately realized it wasn't going to work as you wanted it to...and don't want a droid...and are tired of the limitations that Blackberry puts on you... you will like...and probably love the phone. I do. I had a blackberry...tired of the limitations. I had an iPhone...loved the phone, but not as a business guy. Had a droid X...and, honestly...yechhh. Good phone overall, good hardware...but, dang...clunky to work from a software standpoint (bad user interface, overall...not like the iphone at all). I've owned them, and tried them all...and I've found my phone that I'm going to keep for a long while. The iPhone is a beautiful phone...and no one can argue that Cupertino's industrial design is second to none...and is really, really FUN. But, not built for business. The Blackberry? All business and ZERO fun (sales are WAY down for Blackberry products across the board because of the pitifully weak app offering, slow processor speeds, and lack of overall "coolness" that has started some significant iPhone and Droid envy among the Blackberry-carrying people). The Droid? Probably a good middle-of-the-road choice for those who aren't Applites or those who still wear their "Hate Gates" jammies.
But, if you want the ability to work with Office and Outlook the way you are right now with your Blackberry, and the way you wish you could with your Droid and iPhone...and want a really, really interesting and neat UI that meshes everything together...this may be a good...Read more›

Samsung Exhibit 4G Android Phone, Black (T-Mobile) Review

Samsung Exhibit 4G Android Phone, Black (T-Mobile)

(More customer reviews)
I got this 3 weeks ago on contract from T-Mobile for $80 with rebate. I had looked at the other premium Android-powered smartphones they had (LG G2X, Samsung Galaxy/Vibrant 4G, HTC Sensation, My Touch 4G, Sidekick 4G), but their prices turned me away to the Exhibit 4G.
Here's the run-down on the Exhibit 4G...
This is my 3rd Samsung handset and like the others it is high-quality and loaded with features. It's compact for a smartphone just 4.6 in. tall, 2.2 in. wide, and .5 in. thick, and lightweight at 125 grams. It's made almost entirely of plastic, but that's not all bad because it has great heft, and is easy, and is wel to hold thanks to a soft-touch coating on the battery cover and part of the front and sides.
Hardware-wise the Exhibit packs some features found on high-end devices. The 3.5 inch, 16 million color support 480x800 LCD capacitive touchscreen looks great and has very high pixel density. The resolution and color reproduction and saturation is very good for an LCD unit, I'd say on-par with the HTC Sensation's S-LCD display. Pictures, graphics, and videos look great. Granted, it can't go blow-for-blow with the Super AMOLED displays, but for the price you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one. It is also very sensitive and responsive to inputs.
The Exhibit has a 1 GHz ARM-A8 Cortex Hummingbird processor, 512mb of RAM, and 1 GB internal storage, expandable to 32GB by a MicroSD card. There's also b/g/n WiFi, multi-touch input, an accelerometer for UI autorotate, proximity sensor to lock the display, and an ambient-light sensor to adjust display brightness.
There are only three physical hardware buttons and they are responsive and sturdy. The up-down volume rocker on the left side, a power/lock/unlock button on the right, and a large home button on the front. Interestingly, unlike other Android phones there are just three capacitive Android keys for menu, back, and search under the screen. Another plus is that the memory and SIM card are both accessible through a spring-loaded slots. The SD card on the left side, and the SIM is just under the battery cover, so you don't need to remove the battery to access them. Way to go Samsung!
The The software feature set is also impressive for a sub-$100 smartphone. Thankfully, the Exhibit isn't loaded down with bloatware like some other handsets. You do get exclusive T-Mobile software like AppPack, T-Mobile Mall (to browse and buy T-Mobile apps), Highlight, Name ID (costs $3.99 a month), T-Mobile TV (to watch popular TV shows), and Quix Video Chat. You also get the preloaded Google Apps like Maps with Navigation, Places, Search, and other Apps like Slacker Radio, TeleNav GPS, navigation,The Exhibit is feature packed, almost bursting at the seams when it comes to software.
It runs "Gingerbread" Android 2.3.3 with Samsung's Touchwhiz interface, which is a good one. It's easy to use and I got the hang of it pretty quickly. It's well-laid out and arranged so all the functions, menus, and "Widgets" are easy to find and use. Thankfully Samsung didn't choke out and destroy the stock Android OS, so it's customizable as well.
The small-for-a-smartphone screen does make typing on the portrait keyboard a little difficult. I have ham hands and it took me a while to get used to it. the landscape keyboard is a different story though with large keys. You do get Swype input functionality though, which is useful. There is also voice text input which works pretty good!
I really like the organizer, plus you can sync your calendar and event notifications to other Android-powered phones and Gmail accounts as well as share media and files (you can't share ones you had to buy) through the AllShare app. As a plus, T-Mobile lets you allow the installation of virtually every 3rd party App on the Market.
You don't get a 5 or 8 MP camera, and you can't shoot 720P or 1080 HD video from the Exhibit. You're stuck with a 3.2 MP (2040x1536) camera and D1 (720x480) video recording, which isn't too bad. Pictures in daylight come out good. Colors are a bit soft and you don't get nearly as many details as with a 5+ MP unit, but they are good enough to print. Low light photos suffer from lots noise which destroys pretty much all fine detail, but thankfully the LED flash is very powerful, illuminating out to 10 feet, so you can take some servicable images. Thre's a front-facing camera for video calling or photos as well.
The flash is also a video light, so videos are also servicable, but only out to about 5 feet. Like all of the Samsung devices I've used, you get a good camera interface with 13 scene modes(candle light, WDR backlight, firework, text, sports, etc.), 3 shooting modes (single, panorama, burst), exposure metering, negative, monocolor, and sepia mode, image quality, adjustable color balance and saturation, exposure value, contrast, and sharpness. Most all of those are also found in the camcorder interface as well.
There's no physical camera shutter button (like most Android phones, touch to focus and shoot), digital zoom, and the shooting performance really needs improvement. It takes about 3-4 seconds to acquire focus and shap the picture, and I've noticed that shot-to-shot times are a bit slow, so don't count on it to get fast follow-up shots. If you want a phone with one of the best cameras I've ever used, get a Samsung Pixon. Probably the most well-rounded camera phone ever (even now in my opinion. I was sad to see mine go). Maybe I'm being picky, but I was spoiled by great cameras! But hey, remember this cost $80 (versus $200), so you really get a lot!
The Touchwiz media player is good and easy to use. There are 9 settings (one customizable) for equalizer, visualization, effects, and file management. Sound quality with media and calling were pretty good. It does what a phone is supposed to do and does it well with good voice quality and clarity. The earpiece and speakerphone could be more powerful though. I have to turn the volumw up high to hear callers over the speaker even indoors. Although it's adequate, the media volume could also use some improvement as I had to turn up the volume when listening to a video or song. Plug in the headphones and it's a different story. I enjoyed the sound quality and loudness.
Web browsing is very good. The Exhibit supports both 3G and HSPA+ 4G connectivity which is a theoretical 21 mbps, but I only saw 6 down and 2 up using Speed Test app running on the network with good signal strength, and about the same on WiFi. It has full Flash support as well, but sometimes pages with lots of Flash content load slow and even stall. To avoid this, you can set the Flash setting to on demand.
Battery life is great. You get a 1500 mah. Li-ion battery that gave me about 3 days with moderate use before it beeped at me. Heavy calling, camera/camcorder flash use, Web browsing, and media player useage will quickly drain the battery, but you'll still get a day and a half out of it which is impressive.
So there's the major stuff.
Pros:
Ridiculously low on-contract price
Samsung's Touchwiz interface is customizable and easy to use
High quality construction and good feel
Impressive handware and software feature set
Camera flash/video light
Android 2.3
Adjustable camera settings
Good display
No need to remove battery to access MicroSD and SIM card
4G support
Competent Web browsing
Good call clarity
Good battery life
Front-facing camera
1 Ghz processor
Cons
Smallish screen makes using portrait keyboard difficult
3.2 MP camera and subpar D1 video
Poor shooting performance
No digital zoom
No AMOLED display
No physical shutter button
Web browsing could be better
Wished it had Dolby's DNse 5.1 audio enhancement feature
Speaker phone, earpiece, and media volume could be louder
I am being a little picky here, but that's because I am, but for $80, you can't beat it. If you want a high-end phone but don't have or want to shell out $200 or more, take a look at the Exhibit. You will find most of the premium features for a very un-premium bottom shelf price. I was sold and after living with it for a few weeks, I am glad I chose the Exhibit.

Samsung B2100 Unlocked Quad-Band Phone, Extreme Anti-Shock, Waterproof, Built-in Flashlight, Bluetooth-International Warranty-Black Review

Samsung B2100 Unlocked Quad-Band Phone, Extreme Anti-Shock, Waterproof, Built-in Flashlight, Bluetooth-International Warranty-Black

It is unfortunate more mobile phones are not made to be waterproof and shockproof with a built-in fm radio, as the Samsung B2100 is. We had high hopes when we purchased this "unlocked" mobile phone through Amazon.com, however, upon receipt we soon realized it was only partially unlocked. We spoke to AT&T Customer Support over the phone, took it to our local AT&T store, followed by taking it to a Best Buy Mobile store, and all three sources, and their multiple representatives all concluded the phone was not fully unlocked. This is a UK based cell phone, and we are US based customers currently on the AT&T network. The phone is unlocked in the sense that we can make and receive phone calls without issue, but not fully unlocked in that the phone does not permit us to send or receive photo messages, nor can we connect to the internet with it. When AT&T and Best Buy Mobile Reps went into the menu settings of the phone, to where they needed to adjust the corresponding tower/network code to remedy these issues, the UK code was grayed out (0.0.00.0) and therefore unchangeable to a US one. I then e-mailed Samsung USA and Samsung UK with no response. AT&T phone based customer support was unable to proceed with any step-by-step instructions, as this UK phone is not in their US database, which is why we then went to our local AT&T store instead, per their request. When our local AT&T store could not help us in any way, despite the best efforts of their entire in-store team, we then proceeded to Best Buy Mobile, who also tried vigilantly, without success to address this issue. We also Googled this issue, and found a few other folks who had these same issues, but nobody seemed to be offering any real solutions. On that note, we even posted our issue on Fixya.com, with no response of any kind. Having exhausted our efforts, today I called Amazon.com who was kind enough to e-mail us the necessary information to begin our full-refund process. It's just unfortunate we could not find a fix for this issue, as I am sure it's out there somewhere, as we would have liked to keep the phone. None of the US phones currently for sale at our local AT&T store or local Best Buy Mobile are said to be waterproof, as this one is, and all of their "military grade" phones are flip-phones, with minimal water resistance.
If you do not care about being unable to send/receive photo messages, or connect to the internet, and just want a durable waterproof phone, this may be the phone for you. There's a "Samsung B2100 Review" currently on YouTube, which I will attempt to link below, showing the phone fully submerged in a tank of water, receiving a phone call, and still working perfectly when they take it back out. Oh, and it has a built-in flashlight too, just in case (no camera flash though).

HTC Desire A8181 Android Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Wi-Fi, Touchscreen and Bluetooth--International Version with No Warranty Review

HTC Desire A8181 Android Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Wi-Fi, Touchscreen and Bluetooth--International Version with No Warranty
Average Reviews:

I have had my unlocked HTC Desire for a little over two weeks. At first, I was thrilled with it because it has such a nice display and Android 2.1 runs so smoothly. In the last couple of days, though, it has developed an annoying issue and I think all potential buyers should be warned. Occasionally when placing a call, the screen will go blank and there is no way to end the call or get the display back. HTC delivered at least my Desire with this flaw - and there are some hits on Google about this. All you have to do is Google "HTC Desire screen goes blank" to see what I mean. Apparently, the proximity sensor used by HTC does not work correctly all of the time. What it should do is turn off the screen and disable the buttons when you place the phone to your ear. The faulty sensor does not turn the screen back on and enable the buttons when you pull the phone away from your ear. I am hoping the Android 2.2 update will fix this problem, otherwise I am going to return my phone before the 30-day return period expires.
** Edited to add **
Two things have eliminated this problem today - and I do not know which helped the most. First, Android 2.2 was offered on the Desire today and I updated it. Second, one internet post indicated that a clear scratch protector may be causing the problem. I removed the scratch protector from the screen and the problem has gone away. I am not comfortable using it with no scratch protector - but I am much happier with the phone.

LG Vortex Android Phone, Purple (Verizon Wireless) Review

LG Vortex Android Phone, Purple (Verizon Wireless)

This is the first smart phone I have owned and I really enjoy it. It stays charged for me and I like the setup. I dont have a problem with my battery it usually last me a day or two depending on how much web browsing I do. It has also replaced my mp3 player. Its nice to be able to have your phone with you while you excercise instead of both a phone and mp3/ipod! Also I like the fact that I can connect to my home internet since I only pay for the 150mb plan, that way I dont go over my data plan.

Swype Keyboard

An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.

In the image to the right, the word "mind" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.
